Either a) or b) is true as they are mutually exclusive. Pick one and stick with it.
a) The surge in illegals was due to push factors, and the Malaysian solution which address pull factors was a complete waste of time or
b) The surge was due to pull factors caused by Dudd's dismantling of the pacific solution, and Labor was lying to the voters for 2 years.
"Whether... the Malaysian solution would or would not have worked is not the issue." Actually it is. Why on earth would the coalition support stripping away all the protections for asylum seeker for yet another ill considered labor thought bubble.
