I suppose that I feel that a wrong was done by Kirner
all those years ago when the laws of that time
stated that it had to be 14 years of service to
get a parliamentary pension. Kirner was in for 12 years.
The only pension that she's receiving is the super that
she's paid in herself. I guess she hoped that they would
make exceptions in her case as Premier - and the laws
would be changed. They weren't.

Currently she's blin in her right eye and has severe
osteoporosis. Yet she's still contributing to the
Community as she's always done. She currently holds
the position of Victoria's Communities Ambassador -
showing disadvantaged people which buttons to push to
get things done.

Anyway, I am merely expressing my opinion in Kirner's case.
Especially after reading the article - "Howard tops ex-PMs
in perks." which makes me wonder why some get things -
others don't - and the list of benefits the ex-PMs get
is really quite amazing - all funded by the taxpayer.

cont'd ...

It seems to me that there's something dreadfully
wrong with a system that gives some politicians
very generous benefits (in addition to their
pensions) after much shorter times
of service - and yet others like Kirner - are denied
not only the benefits but a parliamentary pension
after 12 years. The laws surely must be
changed for the sake of equity.

Well yes. Politicians should have 9% of their salary paid into their
super fund, like other employees. All other perks should go, as with
other employees.

The equity that I'm talking about is the grace
period that was allowed all Liberal MPs regarding
their parliamentary pensions previously - until Jeff Kennett
refused to give it to Joan Kirner on her retirement.

He however retired on a full parliamentary pension as well
as earning money from other sources.

Thanks for that OUG, it answers my question. You did a big thing in getting the second mortgage and relying on circumstance being favorable for the kids. I could never put into jeopardy the piece of dirt that I call home for my kids, unless it was life or death. A selfless act, well done.
