Given that they hold the balance of power and can do something, and their vocal opposition but little else, the conclusion can only be that they benefit from the government's abysmal policy.
The Greens win both ways in that their utterances means that the mistreatment of refugees maintains their relevance, and hopefully voters from Labor's left move to their camp. This is better than Christmas for them.
If anyone actually questioned why they stood back and did nothing, it would shatter their veneer of morality.
Support for Labor under these conditions makes them complicit and in spite of their protestations, accessories to the Malaysian solution. Anything else is simply playing both sides of the fence.
