Arjay, I actually have Jason Burkes book in my bookshelf and
nowhere that I can remember, did he claim that no such thing as
Al Qaeda exists.

What he did explain was that many peoples perception was all wrong.
In Afghanistan you had a whole heap of extremist groups,often
squabbling and with little organisation between them. bin Laden
was the one person who had serious money, which made all the
difference, he got results because of it.

He thus became the pin up boy for all these groups, for their
idealism was the same, ie the overthrow of the West, based on
militant Islam of the Qutb school mainly.

So you need to see Al Qaeda more as a loosely organised franchise,
rather then one large organisation which is in any way well organised.
