That is whats termed petty crime, not that petty crime is not serious, it is. As I said, I don't want to see crime committed in the community, and there should be consequences in the form of punishment for those who commit crime, but that's all after the fact. The evidence shows that by simply concentrating on enforcement and punishment as a single control measure is not effective in reducing the overall crime rate. By increasing punitive action against young offenders increases the incarceration rates, but does nothing to reduce the overall rate of crime. I've said to many a gung ho redneck, you included, that the answer lies in eliminating the root causes that leads to anti-social criminal activity, not simply punitive action alone.

I have never been convinced of jail type incarceration for young offenders. I am however, convinced that deprivation of freedom with physical labour is a proper approach.
Offenders will quickly realise that their actions will have consequences that leave a far stronger & longer impression & will help develop a mentality with a greater sense of responsibility.
Incarceration with mod cons & no responsibility other than staying put has proven an utter failure for many years now. It does nothing more than strengthen resentment for authority & create a culture for bureaucrats which shows no obvious interest other than a career that ends with a generous Superannuation.
Those in authority never once give a second thought about how all this can be made better because idiotic & selfish bureaucrats always consult with academic background "social experts" who know nothing apart from fleecing the Tax coffers with the help of incompetent bureaucrats whose goal of a cosy Superannuation they share.
What hope is there with a system where pleading guilty to something you haven't done to get a lighter sentence ? Surely, this nonsense can be stopped by voting for the incompetent & corrupt political parties to be replaced. As Warren Buffet said. This can be achieved by a Law that when deficit goes above a couple of percent the Administration is automatically excluded from standing for election. In Australia that would mean the end of LNP/ALP but so be it ! That same system should be adopted for Law & Order !
