In a recent interview with Tom Calma, an ABC activist and political urger hinted that Calma might be in the running for the plum job of Governor General when the current incumbent’s time is up.

The idea of having an aboriginal person as Governor General at this time is identity politics ‘writ large’. It is possible that there might be someone of that background who has the merit to do the job - as it is possible that others from any one of our diverse cultures would too.

But, an appointment by the Albanese government of an aboriginal to the prestigious post would be solely because of race. The Albanese government is obsessed with race. And what a way to get revenge for the loss of the racist Voice referendum! Particularly when the suggested nominee is one of the co-writers of the disastrous aboriginal voice to parliament. Not to mention Calma's ardent republicanism, which should rule him out of any chance of being the Monarch's representative.

According to news sources including Quadrant, Sky
News, and The Australian. There are several names
in the running for the position of Governor General.
Professor Tom Calma has made it clear that the Prime
Minister's office has not approached him regarding
the position and that he hasn't given it much
thought on the subject.

The Constitution requires the PM to consult with the
monarch on the subject. Which is what the PM is
doing. At the moment nothing definite has been decided.

However, it is an interesting issue.

Sir Douglas Nicholls became Australia's first Indigenous
Governor of South Australia in 1976 under Prime Minister
Malcolm Fraser. He was recommended for the position by
Premier Don Dunstan.

Professor Tom Calma has an impressive background as a
Human Rights activist, a social justice campaigner,
a man who's been awarded many honours and awards. He's
the 6th Chancellor of the University of Canberra (since 2014)
after 2 years as Deputy Chancellor. He's had diplomatic
posts in India and Vietnam - and the list goes on.

Yes, he is pro a Republic. But then so was the former
Governor-General - Quentin Bryce. It did not affect the job
she did.

Perhaps the qualities we should be looking at in our
leaders and representatives - are patience, tact, self-control,
and courtesy. Qualities that both Quentin Bryce and the
current Governor General - David Hurley displayed in spades.
Instead of making judgements on their race,
gender. or anything else. And perhaps before criticizing
we should wait until they actually get the job.

Exciting times ahead.

Quentin Bryce's mum had the most awesome daughter
in the world. And as was said about Margaret
Thatcher in politics - "She was clearly the best
man among them."
