Double dissolution?

Labor's spat with the Greens is blocking Albo's $10bn splurge on housing and Albo is threatening the Greens with a double dissolution election which will probably reduce their numbers.

However, given Labor's cost of living crisis and the collapse in support for the divisive "voice" this holds serious risks for Labor too.

"Having deliberately floated the threat of a double-dissolution election over the government’s stalled social housing policy, Anthony Albanese now owns the illusion. At this stage, few in Canberra are taking him seriously. All prime ministers covet a double-dissolution trigger in a political arms race.

But it is a politically risky manoeuvre to start throwing early election threats around. Which suggests it shouldn’t be so readily dismissed. In Albanese’s case, it would appear on the surface to signal an increasing rage at the Greens and their intransigence on the $10bn housing fund which the government wants to get off the books as cost-of-living issues start to bite."

Given Albanese's behaviour ever since he was 'elected' with less than a third of the primary vote, he is mad enough to give it a go. He's doubly mad to turn on his ally the Greens, but mad he is.

I say, bring it on. It would clear the air, and indicate whether or not Australian voters really want democracy, or if they prefer the Communism in a new coat under Albanese.

It can't be done until next year, and the referendum will be a good indicator of how it would go for him.

Its a threat that holds little fear for the Greens. In a DD election, the quotas required to elect a Senator are halved. Although its possible for minor parties to be overwhelmed in the hoopla of an election, its also possible they can increase, or at least hold, their vote as the two majors rip into each other.

Dear Shadow Minister,

I don't think that the government wants a double
dissolution. They are determined to have the
Housing Fund legislation passed as it was an
election commitment. I believe the PM when he says
he doesn't want to play politics. But the Greens
seem to oppose the Bill and they are insisting on
a rent freeze for 2 years - which the government is
refusing.

What happens next - we'll have to wait and see who
blinks first. It would help though if the Opposition
instead of saying NO to everything ( aTony Abbott tactic)
would support the government on this Bill which would
help people.

For once I am in agreement with the Greens policy, although probably for an entirely different reason.

I believe public housing is totally immoral. It is wrong to take even more from those struggling to pay their mortgage having worked their backsides off to provide their own housing, to give those who have done little or nothing to attempt to supply their own. Albo will be increasing his tax take to fund all his crazy promises, particularly those to the least deserving in the community.

Perhaps some type of military camp housing would be the answer so we don't end up funding even members of parliament in public housing, once they get this tax payer hand out of nice homes on the cheap.

A Double dissolution, I doubt it would make much difference other than lengthen the time to the train wreck for which we are heading with the ridiculous immigration policies of both majors.

The typical old non thinking response from that Usual Suspect Hassy, "some type of military camp housing would be the answer". We are a wealthy developed country, with a moral obligation to provide for our citizens in need. Boot camps and tents are not the answer.

I'm not in agreement with the Greens in opposing the $10 billion Labor Future Fund. I certainly understand Greens concerns about renters, and social and affordable housing in general, but I don't think this is the way to achieve a better outcome, not with so much riding on it.
