Zelensky: victim of colosseum politics : Comments

By Binoy Kampmark, published 4/3/2025

There was a revolting tabloid quality to the Oval Office reception given to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on February 28, but then again, President Donald Trump is a tabloid brute.

Zelenskyy is a "victim" of his own arrogance, presenting himself in the Whitehouse dressed like a bum, ensuring that Trump, rightly or wrongly, will cut Ukraine loose, leaving it to a Europe that can't even defend itself without the US.

Zelensky: ?victim of colosseum politics?

Zelensky: victim of Obama / Biden US Administration.

This war should never have happened (Trump).

And he’ll certainly make sure it doesn’t continue!

Zelensky acted like a spoiled child who always got what he wanted, but asked for another toy and was told no by his parents for the very first time.

I almost feel sorry for Binoy. We now actually have a US President who displays all the vices that Binoy has long accused the USA of exhibiting – ruthlessness, bullying, treachery, utter self-interest, callousness and self-aggrandisement. But Trump is showing these traits most starkly in support of a cause Binoy also supports - that Ukraine should surrender to Putin, give up on democracy and accept the status of vassal state.

Hi Rhian,

"But Trump is showing these traits most starkly in support of a cause Binoy also supports - that Ukraine should surrender to Putin, give up on democracy and accept the status of vassal state."

I actually think the opposite is true, so I will share what I wrote on another thread here as well, and throw a little extra in...

Trump campaigned on peace and an end to the war, is it not you who expects him to throw democracy and his constituents onto the dustheap and not enact the policies they voted for him for?
- Instead expect those same people who voted for peace and an end to the war, to instead go and fight and die in that same war?

What democracy do you support?

Zelensky campaigned on peace in 2019.
He's the one who spat upon democracy

- From other thread below -

Britain and Europe were ill-prepared for democracy.
They all assumed the new US President should continue the same policies.

Look at the global efforts to impeach / discredit / sue / denigrate.
They were going to take control of his business empire.
They gave him mugshots, labelled him a rapist.
Impeached him for investigating Biden's wrongdoing.

(regardless of how one feels about the man)

What does that say about all of our democracies?
The way the UK and Europe are losing their collective minds hysterically right now?
THEY WEREN'T AT ALL PREPARED TO ACCEPT DEMOCRACY, A CHOICE BY THE PEOPLE.

Well obviously democracy is not a choice by the people.
It's a continuation of set policies no matter whose in charge.
Are our leaders not all just branch managers and their policies a continuation of that which big business / elites / political donors and bureaucrats want?
That we citizens decide little, if nothing at all?

- Trumps election proves that's exactly how it is.

This is not about Ukraine:
In February 2022, Europe was attacked by a tyrant from the east, and while the battleground happens to presently be in Ukraine, tomorrow it could rage anywhere.

Within a few days, thousands of innocent Ukrainians were murdered, tortured and raped. Thousands of children too were forcibly torn from their families and adopted across the border. The destruction was enormous. If Europe fails to protect itself, then that will be not thousands but millions of Europeans.

The USA ought to be thanked for its past support of free Europe in World-wars 1 and 2 and during the cold war with the U.S.S.R, but these days are obviously over now, America is no longer interested in saving anyone else, and so the free world has to fend for itself while forgetting for all practical purposes that the United-States of America ever existed.

Life must go on.
It will be hard, there will be pain, but Europe can make it.
Australia? I am not as sure, but burying our head in the sand believing that America will somehow come to our aid and save us from Chinese slavery, is the most dangerous option: it will not. Whoever be the Australian PM at the time, s/he will be treated by the Americans no better than Zelensky.
