Law of diminishing marginal utility : Comments

By Greg Bondar, published 28/10/2020

So, how much of COVID-19 can we take before it loses its ‘fear’ impact? In other words, have we reached, or reaching, a COVID-19 immunity worldview due to pandemic fatigue and pandemic anger?

The biblical book of Kings opens by recounting King David's last days: as David became old, he was cold and no clothes could warm him, so instead they brought him a young virgin to warm him up (though it is mentioned that they had no intercourse). Rashi, the canonical Jewish bible-commentator, explains: "thus we learn that young virgins are better warmers".

Later some wise men wondered: "Is this how Rashi came to know this fact?"!

Clearly, human nature is such that when we are in trouble we cry, repent and pray to God, but when things go well we become corrupt and forget about God. We tend to go through this cycle again and again - will we ever learn?

And do we need the bible to tell us this obvious fact of life?
