On television advertising : Comments

By Don Aitkin, published 2/10/2020

Over the past few months I have become more and more aware of, interested even, in what passes for advertising on our commercial TV channels, and on the SBS as well.

  1. Pages:

  3. 2
  4. 3
  5. 4
  6. 5
  7. All
Not much interest here, Don. Albeit, one or two got a big belly laughs from me.

Choosi etc, really bugs me, It's not free, given they earn commissions that reflect the end price the mug consumer pays for the product or service.

My free to air entertainment is limited to the footy or Cricket where I can take the audio from commercial-free service and the video from the free to air. Plus the occassional ABC mini-series.

Then I fire up the DVD player.

When I want to purchase something? I get on line and check out the options. And usually succeed in saving 50-75%. And have the product delivered to the door. So most of the commercials are wasted on me, save, I'm able to compare and contrast prices and value for money.

I believe we need to be more circumspect with what we buy and how much we charge to the credit card, given the depression I see coming. And a visionless, divided, reactive government doing too little too late.

Just one glimmer of hope for me here and in the U.S.A. And that finally is, we have nuclear power now officially part of the available energy mix!

And the lifting by Donald trump of R+D into thorium and its children, one of which is the miracle cancer cure, bismuth 213.

Bismuth 213 could enable that nation that makes it as a virtually free byproduct of MSR thorium, nuclear power. A medical tourist industry that could be in annual millions and turbocharge regional and rural economies. Rural and regional airlines, hotel and motel chains.

Given the therapy can be done in hours in day clinics. And the patients then convalesce in hotels and motels as they await the usually, conclusive, all clear reports, or the need for (a) follow-up treatment(s). And where they'd be a captive Audience for the tourist industry, touting this or that once in a lifetime, Australian Info-docu/attraction that they could include in their itinerary.

Take care and stay safe.

I have tried to get this topic off the ground several times but no takers. Hopefully Alan B has more success.
TV programming is one of my favourite gripes. Beyond the point of saturation, Australian TV saturation advertising & just as insane saturation of promos is nothing short of utter insanity !
Are these programmers so in the pockets of companies that they forfeit sanity for money ? It certainly looks that way.
I have not the slightest doubt that this insanity is the cause of domestic disputes as the disruption to programmes is enough to drive even the thickest of thick viewers p the wall.
I actually find the promos way worse than plain commercials. At times, they play the same promo or commercial twice in a row.
The present board in charge of programming standards needs sacking on the spot !

I threw my television out the back door during the unprovoked torture by gay rights and their misdirected gay marriage campaign.
At the same time coincidentally, the ABC and I also parted company indefinitely for the same reason!

What a completely joyous life it is without television: But I’d forgotten the lessons I learned about television and the stupid that it always was, from the time of its introduction in the fifties.

The programs on most commercial TV make the ads look good. Appealing to the bottom feeders and bogans. In a half hour program you get 15 minutes of ads. What about those blokes with the underpants! I mostly watch our ABC and SBS and their associated channels, good for news and other quality programs of interest.

I've seen commercials promoting "clean coal"! Albeit, not the prohibitive costs and the horrendous energy coefficient, which rarely if ever gets above 6%?

Never ever seen one extolling the virtues of nuclear power and the claim that, it has per gigawatt, the lowest fatality rate of any energy provision, lower even than renewables?

Or the fact that unconventional nuclear power (MSR thorium) has the lowest costing, cleanest safest energy generation. And carbon-free to boot.

Seriously, had either Chernobyl or Fukushima been configured as M. S.R's, i.e., Molten salt reactors, burning far more abundant and far less costly thorium? None of the problems attributed to those two reactors would have occurred, let alone, have the hugely illinformed//misinformed anti-nuclear brigade rattling their cages/going bananas any time the (the sky will fall) topic is raised.

I wonder what they'd do if someone had the wit to advertise nuclear power along with the verifiable facts pertaining to it.

Or if either coal or gas had to conform to the same rougue emissions criteria as nuclear power, neither would be able to operate!

Would we still have a mining industry if it didn't include coal or gas?

You bet and even more so, given we'd need to mine uranium and or, thorium. Plus lithium and beryllium.

Then we'd need to mine and refine twice as much copper for electric vehicles, when we finally get around to electrifying the economy. Something we can't avoid given the phasing out of combustion engines by the world's vehicle manufacturers.

As for advertising on free to air? It'd be a shame to interrupt all those commercials, with a bit of programme.

"I mostly watch our ABC and SBS and their associated channels, good for news and other quality programs of interest" Paul.

Gee Paul, I thought you were fully a committed Green/lefty, I didn't realise you had to get your brainwashing reinforced nightly.

I will admit that some of the best documentaries have moved from the ABC to SBS, leaving no reason to ever watch the ABC, but News & current affairs Paul. You must be turning into a mushroom if you want to be kept in the dark & fed on Bull sh1t.

I listened to ABC Radio some time back when the ABC reporter became rather obviously more & more irate when the person she interviewed did not let herself get sucked in & say something negative about Trump.
ABC TV hosts too are latching onto the most minimal opportunities to be negative about POTUS.
I don't have any time for the man personally but I rather have him in charge than a Progressive who'd re-stock the swamp worse than it was before. Trump did succeed in ridding America of quite a lot of deadwood. I really wish Morrison would do the same here.
"Our" ABC is full-time advertising for the Progressives as does the SBS.

Hassy, I must admit I have not come across anyone on the ABC or SBS that advocated YOUR idea of nuking 200 million innocent men, women and children in Pakistan, those bleeding heart liberals. You put up what you see as a perfectly reasonable idea, and the soft cocks wont run with it.

BTW Hassy, you said you landed planes on aircraft carriers, did you ever land in the drink? If not, why not?

You are dead right there Paul.

Most of the clowns on SBS or the ABC would wipe out Oz, rather than harm a single hair of any ethnic head. Talk about funding our own 5Th column.

Anybody ever call you an 'utter racist ..... ' before ?

Despicable. You and hasbeen make me ashamed to be Australian.

loudmouth2,
No if's or but's here in that context. Paul's rambling on about Hasbeen wanting to nuke a nation of 200 million.
No he doesn't, he'd take drastic action if drastic action were needed. What Paul's saying is that People whose religion actually dictates openly & unashamedly to wipe us off the face off the Earth need to be dealt with in a way that prevents them from continuing causing harm to their own & others.
Paul objects to prevention & cure yet he has no qualms about supporting a political crowd that keeps dragging our nation down further at every turn. Sounds to like you're part of his team also.
You & Paul are the utter racists here, you prove it ceaselessly !

Phil,

What type of planes did you fly in the Navy?

What aircraft carriers did you serve on?

FOULmouth,

You just said: "Despicable. You and Hasbeen make me ashamed to be Australian."

Keep in mind you are now also an Asian as a result of the Asianization process in Australia (aka Australian Multiculturalism) from the Great Asianization Period (1980-2020) in Australian history.

Which begs the question: Do you feel ashamed to be Asian?

LOUDmouth,

It's good to see you have accepted your Asianess.

Australia is now one of the principal Asian nation-states all thanks to the Asianization process (aka Australian Multiculturalism) that took place during the Great Asianization Period (1980-2020) in Australian history.

You and I have accepted our Asian identity but there are a lot on OLO who are refusing to do so because they cannot bring themselves to make the cultural leap from Australianess into Asianess.

Our hope lies with the younger generation who were born towards the end of the Great Asianization Period (1980-2020) and see themselves a Asians.

Interesting comments. I must check out some advertising rather than mute, change channels or go or a drink and nibble when advertising comes on.

GBC,

Pay close attention to the content of the ads and how the ads are specifically aimed at certain groups of people especially now that Australia is an Asian nation state and that Australians have come to share an Asian identity as a result of the Asianization process (aka Australian Multiculturalism) of the Great Asianization Period (1980-2020) in Australian history.

Banking commercials on TV tend to focus more on the Chinese as a group because they seem to be the ones with money and property in Australia.

See how many other examples you can find.

I had the SBS on for some time today & I'm unsure what was shown more, promos or actual programmes.
I had to turn it off, it just ecame too insane to tolerate. The people in charge of the programming must be close to brain-dead !
There was a super show on yesterday-Morocco from the Air but again, it was spoiled by the repetitive promos.

Mr O,

The wife has had a bad knee for sometime, nothing has worked for her. She is a believer in Chinese herbal medicine. A trip to the 'Hunamuna' for a consultation, then capsules containing a mix of concentrated plant root, leaves and bark, etc etc, along with a very strong herbal tea to drink. Following a mystical reading, yep, her knee has in a few days come good. She is back doing her water exercises. Amazing.

Hi Paul,

You learn so much on OLO !

I was reconciled to sticking with Osteomol, but I'll give mystical readings a go now, why didn't I think of it before :)

Hi Joe,

We are not just here to entertain, we are also here to educate and inform.

I'm a bit sceptical when it comes to the "mystical readings", by the herbs and spices, they do have something going for them, and if they fail you can always use them to flavour your fried chicken. There is a bonus, I can drink the herbal tea, maybe I'll try smoking it sometime.

Osteomol = Paracetamol You wont find them in the readings.

I was surprised, the herbalists said; "Take 5 caps right now, and 5 more tonight, then 5 in the morning and 5 in the evening, in 2 days pain will be gone, then take 3 in morning, 3 in evening, until all are gone, I assume pain and caps. These things are 6 times concentrated. Anyway the wife has given them the thumbs up, so what can I say.
