Radical reforms: disbanding police forces in the US : Comments

By Binoy Kampmark, published 10/6/2020

If you can envisage the commencement of a police force as a band of auxiliaries to keep slaves in check, capture escapees and sow much terror, it becomes that much clearer.

Fact check: Camden Police Department has now expanded beyond the numbers when it was first disbanded.

Camden History:
The police department was disbanded and then replaced. Replacements included some former Police and Newbies who were paid less.
REASON: It was so corrupt, people, all people, feared it.
REFORM: Cops were encouraged to mingle with the community rather than issue tickets and summons. Friendly policing
KEY RESULTS: 42% decrease in violent crime in seven years. Open air drug markets disappeared. other crime reduced from 79 per 1000 to 45 per 1000 people

Seems reform and re-education works.
'Id say abandoning wholesale policing and replacing it with community workers etc is stupid.
How the heel is a community worker going to defend people from armed intruders, violent mentally ill and ice adits? Talk to them? Good luck with that.

The better reform is to give all people purpose. Ie work and education.
Trump's policies work.

As an aside the racial make up of Camden and Minneapolis are different. Minneapolis is 63%
White whereas Camden it is less than 25%

Camden is not an example of unfolding police it is an example of reform and increased numbers at lower cost.

Yep. The youngsters of Melbourne and Sydney should also be taking to the streets to abolish po-lice forces

and abolish electricity, house dwellers, and the streets themselves.

Abolition? No, daft! And nearly as simple as herding cats or conception achieved whilst standing in a hammock.

Albeit there is a case for a serious overhaul, retraining and lie detector assisted integrity and attitude testing. In a six-month-long alcohol and drug-free, boot camp for cops. And mandatory for all personal regardless of previous service!

Where the lard can be trained and dieted off! Say based on seal or marine training to eliminate those not emotionally suited?

Policing has to be the hardest job on the planet and some candidates should never be tasked with frontline duties!

As for the knee on the neck. Sometimes the only option to restrain a violent criminal/ice addict? But only until the cuffs are on and the subject effectively calmed with a head bag? And treated with humanity as if one was dealing with someone's dad, mother, sister, son etc.

Rambo cops are not what we need, just professionals who want to serve, not dominate!

To put it bluntly here is footage of Binoy Karpark thrusting his perfectly reasonable "no police case" forward http://youtu.be/I_AOfzrQYV0

What do you think?

You can calm down folks.

It seems the Democrats have read the polls and found that this idiotic idea is not at all popular. So they've now set their publicity department (ie the mainstream media) the task of explaining that when they said they wanted to "defund the police" they didn't really mean they wanted to defund the police..or something.

In a week's time we'll be told by the media that no Democrat ever proposed such a thing and it was never a demand from the rioters either.

A week after that we'll be told its all a Trumpian conspiracy theory and how only stupid right-wingers think anyone ever mentioned it.
