My Irish ancestors (or at least friends and accomplices of them) were pretty enthusiastic about shootings and thieving, and bushranging, etc in the nineteenth century. Come to think of it, most of them (and my other Scottish and Welsh and Cornish ancestors) migrated out here as 7-year guests of the Crown for many of the reasons which you amply demonstrate.

So when has the world been any different ? Enjoy it while you can, like the rest of us.

Lego, without agreeing with all of your points, i share some of your concerns.

I dont have any problem with any nation not wanting people from certain backgrounds.

so, now i have said that, i am sure i too will be described as a racist.

I am not, but i think it would be fair to call me a cultural bigot, because there are some i am also concerned with.

But, i will never judge anyone by the colour of their skin, or by race.

i only judge them by their attachemnt to stupid ideas.

Of course, as you say, when we welcome immigrants from wherever, we know they may - MAY - bring many of their stereotyped idiocies with them, that's par for the course.

Nobody's perfect. And certainly the motley of their ideologies and prejudices may not be to our liking. But that's what it means to be human, brilliant and idiotic, compassionate and pig-ignorant. Surely a democratic country like Australia is ideal ground for teasing out the contradictions and conflicts between that clash of ideas ?

There may even be English people who come, believing that they are in some way superior to others, such as Irish. Yes, they should be welcomed , and argued with, no matter how difficult and protracted, to put them right as to who is actually superior.

Of course, we're getting off the track: Black Americans have been in America about as long as whites, and both a bit short of how long Native Americans have been there. And Hispanics, come to think of it.

So how much longer before whites who have held onto the reins of power for so long share them ? Isn't that what all this is about ?

So is Trumpf championing the ideals of equality for all Americans ? Or the rights of whites ?
