The ABC needs to know its place and time : Comments

By Gary Johns, published 10/5/2017

As for the ABC's Yassmin Abdel-Magied's offensive Anzac Day tweet, and her eulogy to Islamic feminism, Ayaan Hirsi Ali was right to regard her as a 'hypocrite', dripping phony indignation.

ttbn,

Abdel Magied is entitled to make disparaging remarks about Anzac Day if she chooses. Do you want her to be charged with blaspheming the sacred institution of Anzac?

Whether or not Christians have made disparaging remarks about Anzac Day is irrelevant.

Maybe the freedom that the Anzacs fought for included speech about anything . Probably they didn't think they were being saintly when knocking off johnny Turk and stopping Germany was all they had in mind. "Freedom" is a Yank Hollywood slogan . Fair-go allows slinging off at Muslims , Church and Anzac Day.

ttbn,

Abdel Magied's remarks, though inappropriate for Anzac Day, were hardly disparaging. They'd have been quite appropriate for Remembrance Day.

AFAIK no Christian has made the same remarks on Anzac Day that she has, but historically many have made disparaging remarks about Anzac Day.

mac,

No. It's not irrelevant. You said: “ we regularly hear such drivel from Christians.”

So, please answer the question. Well, you can't of course. You are just another Christian hater and apologist for Islam. All mouth and no brains.

Aidan,

But it wasn't Rememberance Day was it? It was Anzac Day. And, Australians have no need to remember or care about the groups the silly girl dragged up.

ttbn,

I noticed that you've resorted to ad hominem attacks.

I don't favor one superstition over any other, all religions are equally ridiculous.

What disparaging things did she say ?
SMH wrote this :"Andrew P Street is a well-known columnist for The Sydney Morning Herald , ..described Gallipoli as a "humiliating defeat", and made a direct link between Anzac Day and a need to examine the pointlessness and politics of war

Other than a few irritable comments on Twitter, there was no backlash to this post or the attached article . Street, however, is a straight, white man in Australia, so making a political statement is something he's deemed within his rights to do. . Jeff Sparrow's 2012 article for Overland on the politics of Anzac Day is still shared every year, and rarely are there calls for his deportation or dismissal. Stan Grant wrote an article yesterday for the ABC about the horrors and racism experienced by Aboriginal soldiers in WWI. Grant is Aboriginal,, even he was not subjected to the entrenched national viciousness that Yassmin received."

Hatred for Mussies sometimes becomes an abuse of Anzac Day's meaning .
