I'm slightly confused. You say there is a problem with the Duluth model but you decline to show evidence to support it. So, what? We are just meant to believe you because you say it's so?
That Greg Anderson suffered from a mental illness is not new news. In the spirit of providing information without a source (we have to believe the author of the piece because he says so, so I demand the same) men who commit violence against women report higher rates of patriarchal attitudes and adherence to gender norms. The majority do not have a diagnosable mental illness. To assert that is to do a grave disservice our already decimated violence against women community service sector. And even if mental health issues were the root of all men's violence against women there is still a huge need for services for those women who have been abused by current or past partners. And such services need to be able to take a much longer term approach than they currently do if those women aren't to end up in the mental health system themselves. Carz,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUMifHT1AwY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZsKdEl0-dg The Dultuh model is criticised because it's un-scientific, ideologically driven and the predominant aggressor theory is not backed by genuine statistics, it's based on the "patriarchal terror" interpretation of family violence. The problem with the current debate on family violence is that people like Rosie Batty are given too much credence.
Ms. Batty is a victim of family violence. She has absolutely no qualifications on the subject, and her amateur opinions, aired publicly, bring nothing but emotional claptrap to the populus, which is entertain by such things. Her elevation to Australian of the Year - merely because she is a victim, like so many other victims of violence, has exacerbated the problem of empty rhetoric. She is deserving of our sympathy, and that's it. It is clear that the authorities could have prevented her husband, a monster, from killing the child he "loved" ( !), but they did not. Nor will they be able to put into operation the political 'feel-gooding' of about domestic violence, unfortunately Posted by ttbn, Thursday, 1 October 2015 11:12:29 AM

facts always ignored
defactos are far more likely to belt partner than husbands people practicing homosexuality have much higher dv rates Indigenous men and woman commit far more dv than most the more we allow feminist and socialist to brainwash our kids the more tax payer money will be wasted on propaganda (usually the type the abc/regressives love). They are not interested in true morality just pushing their hopelessly flawed dogmas. Malcolm obviously needed to jump on the 'moral' bandwagon after his depicable backstabbing of Tony. Poor old Rose simply being used as a puppet. I feel sorry for her but unfortunately her conclusions are about as helpful as Tim Flannerys gw conclusions. ttbn, you have no 'qualifications' either, but yet you continue to give us the benefit of your 'expert' opinion, and so does Rosie Batty.
This article is a load of crock.....and no, not because I subscribe to any Dulith Model or whatever. I had never heard of this before today. This author seems to know the mental health history of all the DV perpetrators/murderers in our country! Is he suggesting ALL murderers are suffering from severe mental health disorders, or just the ones who kill their intimate partners or children? The Government might as well shut down half the maximum security jails and build maximum security mental health institutions instead then? I do agree that the mental health system in this country is very dysfunctional at present, and needs a serious overhaul, but you can ask any law enforcement person if they think all murderers are mad, and they will tell you there are many who are simply bad. Don't forget that our psychiatric and justice systems have to determine if a criminal deliberately planned and killed someone, or if they were of unsound mind at the time. I don't know what the answer to the DV problem in our society is, but I am not convinced that all perpetrators are insane.... Posted by Suseonline, Thursday, 1 October 2015 11:45:58 AM

Anyone from the NT or WA would be aware of the contribution of poor choices, a well-established factor behind the far higher violence numbers and as the sub-set of that, family violence numbers, that are far higher (multiple) than in the remainder of Australia.
Examples of poor choices could include alcohol and substance abuse, and inability or more likely lack of self-discipline to handle their daily functioning, including not being able to handle money. When one considers the lack of respect they shown their own bodies, their lack of concern for others, often expressed as violence, is hardly surprising. It isn't 'poverty' that 'causes' violence. By contrast, I have met many elderly 'grey nomads' and quite a number of them solo elderly women, many of both with serious chronic conditions, who travel Australia in cheap vans, all with a smile despite the odd impossible-to-hide grimace of pain. Not all pain from physical conditions either, some have been alienated from family who prefer to forget them. Yet everyone has the benefit of welfare where they need it. Billions of taxpayers' dollars have been spent in the NT and WA on indigenous housing, start-up businesses and farms and so on. There is SFA to show for it, why? Many indigenous get large windfalls every month from miners, but the dough disappears, where? Think consumer items like crates of expensive liquor and ATVs that are trashed and left. One day people will stop making excuses for men or woman bashing each other. People just can't face the simple fact that man is born with a corrupt nature and when it is fed it reacts in an evil manner. Whether it is a woman manipulating and denying a man his natural right to see his children or a pig of a man belting his wife. Using the term 'mental health'is often just an excuse used for barbarity. It never seems to occur to people that men or women carrying out atrocities don't have to have 'mental health'issues. Much of the mental health issues have been created by social engineers who have encouraged kids in schools to sleep with and experiment with as many partners as possible. They are then dumb enough to ask why we have so much bitterness, hate, jealousy which often ends in domestic violence.

A summary of issues with the Duluth model at http://www.batteredmen.com/batdulut.htm
and http://www.researchgate.net/publication/222822395_The_Duluth_model_A_data-impervious_paradigm_and_a_failed_strategy There is plenty of coverage of the Duluth model available on the web. Some serious academic work, some not so much. It's a model put together by activists rather than skilled professions on the basis of ideology rather than evidence based understanding of DV and has a belief in a gendered view of DV at it's core. The feminists are notorious and shameless for their sloppy research.
Contrary to the self-serving mantras of the educated middle class feminists who very largely shield themselves from those outside of their comfy, entitled, self-indulgent lifestyles, life isn't so simple at all, <Grandmother’s horror: my granddaughter living in tent with ice-addicted mother A GOLD Coast grandmother has spoken of her horror and heartache at seeing her five-year-old granddaughter living in a tent with her ice-addict mother and violent partner. Her claims come as a spokesman for child protection agency, ACT for Kids, has warned of the dangers of at-risk children slipping through the cracks of the judicial system. The grandmother, who asked not to be identified to protect her grandchild, said she was desperately concerned that Grace (not her real name) was being neglected and at risk of being hurt by her mother’s boyfriend. She said he was violent and had already served a jail sentence for assault and theft.. The grandmother has reported her concerns to police, the Department of Child Services (DOCS) and ACT for Kids. She said her daughter was an ice addict and had admitted it to her, her brother, aunt and her friends. “She is actually proud of it and Grace’s father is a convicted drug dealer who is in jail serving a term for manufacturing drugs and dealing,” the grandmother said. “My daughter and her boyfriend have been homeless for nearly a year after they were evicted from the new home they were renting. He put holes in nearly every wall and door, and they are now living in a tent.”.. The grandmother said although DOCS had investigated her claims, they appeared satisfied that her daughter and partner were not using drugs. “They said they could find no evidence that the child was at risk. To my knowledge, my daughter and her partner have not been drug tested. As far as I know, Grace is not at school,” she said... tbc Posted by onthebeach, Thursday, 1 October 2015 11:14:47 PM

The primary reason for domestic violence is cultural. Firstly, aboriginal males are notorious for their violence towards aboriginal females, a fact which was first noted by members of the First Fleet. Governor Phillip himself personally intervened to prevent an aboriginal man from killing a young aboriginal girl. Lieutenant Watkins Tench recounted in his personnel journal about life in the colony with the First Fleet, also told of the extremely violent way which aboriginal men treated their women. He recounted how he had met an very pretty aboriginal girl who showed him the scars of her numerous beatings and spearing's. Things have not changed today, which is why aboriginal woman are so racist, because every high profile aboriginal woman prefers to marry white men.
The Muslim Sydney suburb of Auburn is Australia's domestic violence capitol. This is hardly surprising when you import people into this country who's males have a religious belief that females are just minors, and that men have a duty to physically punish women. But you are never going to see that written in any Australian media, which usually prefaces any articles on domestic violence as "Australia's shame." It is never "aboriginal shame" or "Islam's shame." And the feminist sisterhood is just as bad at ignoring the inconvenient truth. Feminism today is just another socialist ideology which places Australian men as the oppressors and Australian women as the oppressed. Aboriginal and Muslim males may be the primary perpetrators, but he sisters will never admit that. Minorities always get a free pass in socialist groupthink. Even though I'm sure many men identified in domestic violence situations act in a way where they dictate and control their partners and any action that undermines their authority is met with threats, violence or intimidation, this doesn't necessarily mean that things started out that way or that the man was wholly responsible for the path the relationship took.
By all means it may be true the male had some shortcomings of character. He may have an aggressive alpha male attitude (and women have to take some personal responsibility as to the men they choose and the situations they put themselves in too - why are they attracted to the type of men who are more likely to beat them up?) and the bulk of the blame may rest on his shoulders. But it may be just as possible this was initially a good man who has never raised a hand to anyone and was backed into a corner by a unhappy, spiteful, manipulative unreasonable broken woman. I support any effort to deal with relationship issues and prevent domestic violence, but I oppose any effort that would see men unjustly victimised by an unfair system. I don't want to see men dragged out of their homes by police for simply being involved in an argument that their spouse initiated. - No matter how many women are killed, I won't support one man being treated unfairly based upon what another man did. Women can (certainly not always) be just as responsible for acting unreasonably and inflaming relationship situations just as much as men. This is a fact. Its not just about domestic violence. Its about preventing relationships getting to that point that's important. Here's a campaign for ya - You want to change attitudes? "Real men leave their women in better condition than they found them". "Real women don't manipulate or undermine their men." Posted by Armchair Critic, Friday, 2 October 2015 5:34:38 AM

The term Alpha Male is a slur, the best men get the best women and vice versa, equality doesn't exist in the real world nor should it.
White Ribbon is a thinly masked attack on true masculinity which tars all men with the same brush, Feminists are bad women who hate good men because they can't control us, that's all it boils down to. Feminists still demand the protection and productive output of good men without the mutual responsibility and obligations that come with marriage to such men. Men who hurt women are degenerates, good men shun the company of degenerate men, ostracise them and in some circumstances we'll kill them. What White Ribbon wants to do is equate we good men with the degenerates so that the rules which apply to the worst can be used to control the best of us and harness our productivity to maintain essentially useless females. Feminists need society, society doesn't need Feminism and it's unrealistic to expect good men to take on the burden of dealing with bad men without compensation or without the whole society accepting our authority. So dear suffragettes, point out the abusers in my street to me and I'll form a posse and lynch them or make them my slaves so I can watch them at all times and control their behaviour. Then with the profits I make off the labour of those degenerates I'll open a benevolent fund to care for their wives and children and we'll all live happily ever after in patriarchy. Otherwise Rosie Batty, Clementine Ford,Ken Lay,Tom Meagher and the rest can keep their opinions to themselves. Posted by Jay Of Melbourne, Friday, 2 October 2015 6:53:32 AM

<Women more Violent and Controlling than Men: Various Studies find
women-the-aggressors-in-dv June 27th, 2014, Roberta Parision Contrary to the overwhelming perception in society, numerous studies and statistics recently published from a variety of disparate sources have indicated that women are more likely to be verbally and physically aggressive to their partners than men, and are increasingly participating in serious acts of violence against other men, women, the elderly and children. The findings were presented to a symposium on “intimate partner violence” (IPV) at the British Psychological Society’s Division of Forensic Psychology annual conference in Glasgow. Dr Elizabeth Bates from the University of Cumbria and colleagues from the University of Central Lancashire gave 1104 students (706 women and 398 men) questionnaires about their physical aggression and controlling behaviour, towards partners and to same-sex others (including friends). Women were revealed to be more likely to be physically aggressive to their partners, and men were more likely to be physically aggressive to their same-sex partners. Women were also shown to engage in greater levels of controlling behavior, which is understood to be a predictor of physical aggression in both sexes. “This was an interesting finding,” Dr Bates says. “Previous studies have sought to explain male violence towards women as rising from patriarchal values, which motivate men to seek to control women’s behaviour, using violence if necessary. “This study found that women demonstrated a desire to control their partners and were more likely to use physical aggression than men. “It wasn’t just pushing and shoving,” Dr Bates said, of responses to the anonymous questionnaire. “Some people were circling the boxes for things like beating up, kicking, and threatening to use a weapon. “The feminist movement made violence towards women something we talk about. Now there is more support for men and more of them are coming forward.”> tbc.. Posted by onthebeach, Friday, 2 October 2015 10:06:38 AM

<In another finding in Australia, the number of men who report experiencing domestic violence from their current partner has almost doubled since 2005, according to a new survey released last week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The ABS Personal Safety Survey 2012 collected information from men and women aged 18 years and over about their experience of violence since the age of 15. Meanwhile, girls have been found to be more devious than boys in their torment of classmates, Australia’s biggest childhood study reveals. Kids who are poor, overweight, Aboriginal, disabled or living with a single mother are most likely to be picked on in the playground, the Australian Institute of Family Studies has found in a survey of more than 4000 children aged 10 and 11. Three in every five kids had been subjected to “unfriendly behaviour” in the past year, ranging from hitting to name-calling and being left out of social groups. And according to new national crime figures women are now outpacing men in the violence stakes, with the rate of women committing assaults jumping 49 per cent since the mid 1990s. Australian Institute of Criminology data shows the number of female assaults per 100,000 women increased from 125 to 186 between 1996 and 2010 compared to an increase of just 18 per cent for men, while other figures show that mother’s were by far the single biggest group responsible for child abuse and child murder in Australia. Griffith University’s Violence Research and Prevention Program director Professor Paul Mazerolle said there was “no question” young women were getting more involved in violence: “There’s been a moderate increase in [female] violence but we as a community are less tolerant of violence so we’re seeing more of a response from police.”> http://tinyurl.com/og598j5 Posted by onthebeach, Friday, 2 October 2015 2:32:26 PM

Why shouldn't Rosie Batty have a view and a say as well? Are you jealous that others listen to her and not you, is that it? Posted by Suseonline, Saturday, 3 October 2015 12:23:29 PM

The problem with the deluth model is that some people want to pretend that it is a complete explanation for all domestic violence. Somewhere, some time, some place, a man has used DV because he felt entitled to control a partner. However, the majority of the time, DV is the result of a combination of stressors making a dispute get overheated.
Rosie Batty seems like a lovely person, but the amount of publicity that her case has generated smacks of missing white woman syndrome. There is nothing wrong with being white or middle class. However, if she belonged to any other demographic or if the violence had been reciprocal, we would never have heard of her. The cases that get publicised tell us little about the broader pattern of DV. Posted by benk, Saturday, 3 October 2015 10:17:06 PM

The Duluth model was developed by a small group of feminists with five women and 4 men as subjects.
The feminist speculation* underlying the Duluth Model is that "domestic violence is the result of patriarchal ideology in which men are encouraged and expected to control their partners", that men use violence within relationships to exercise power and control. *to call it a 'theory' would be to debase science. However it is typical of the sloppy, self-serving research of the womens movement. Why is bunkum necessary anyhow? It is a misleading as Dr Phil's pop psychology. Worth saying too that Dr Phil isn't qualified either to do what he does. It is entertainment. However audiences wrongly put their trust and even reverence in anything that can be masqueraded as 'research' or 'science'. The Box and the tabloid media are riddled examples of with junk 'science' and politically correct BS. Posted by onthebeach, Sunday, 4 October 2015 9:28:56 AM

In a tense situation you can escalate or deescalate. Feminism has been training women to escalate the tension & then pointing to the alleged "evidence" that "all men are bastards".
All 3 of my exes were abused by their own mothers & were abusive, violent, control freaks because of it. Closing down all funding to these services & increasing funding to mental health would work much better. Posted by imacentristmoderate, Monday, 5 October 2015 6:13:04 AM

Previous History of aggression or violence
Mental Health
Resistance to treatment.
Since the vast majority of mental health hospitals have been closed, many past governments promised to put systems in place to support the mentally ill in the community. THIS NEVER HAPPENED!
The mental health system is now designed to fail the patient. Our prisons have become the defacto mental health institutions.
