The basic point is that Muslim societies seem likely to have experienced centuries of economic backwardness and political problems because of systemic constraints on initiative in responding to changing circumstances. Initiative seems to be suppressed because it is presumed that communal pressure (rather than individual self-discipline) should be relied up to ensure appropriate behaviour by individuals. The radicals who see Islamism (ie making Islam the basis of government) would simply exacerbate the mess that the Muslim world arguably suffers because of a lack of emphasis on the self-disciple required for individual initiative to be tolerated.

No, jihad has been an essential part of Islam since the invention of the religion in the 7th century, there's always a need for jihadis. American imperialism has certainly provided justification, however as the author states, the underlying cause is the culture of Islamic societies themselves.

Islam is a religion of strife, and it's been that way ever since their Prophet died.
The single biggest factor in the upsurge of fundamentalism and terrorism has been Saudi Arabia, their Wahhabi sect has billions in oil revenue to play with and has been funding fundamentalist schools all across the world, promoting their anti-everything mentality, they basically want to return the world to the 16th century and are willing to kill everyone and anyone to achieve this goal. Until the West confronts this scourge AT THE SOURCE the killing, torture and rapes will continue unabated.
A Final Crusade is now virtually inevitable, even if the West tries to avoid it the militant terrorists will force it upon us.
A far better and ultimately less costly response would be to accept that reality and strike first, before they get even more organised and better armed. Take the House of Saud out of SA, wipe out the fundamentalist school network world-wide and enforce real secular education everywhere, force ALL Muslim nations to separate church and state, then we may eventually keep some of the civilisation our predecessors built for us, otherwise we will lose it all, ignorance and violence trump morals and rationality every time.
Here in the West we fought long and hard to rid ourselves of our turbulent priests and our societies blossomed thereafter, it's time to finish that job on a global scale!

Game changer, indeed. That would make the Beijing-Moscow-Berlin New Silk Road a reality, and wouldn't the world be a better place were that to happen!!
I do, however, wonder if it is even possible. Not only does the US hold Germany's sovereign wealth in the form of its gold bullion, but Germany is still an occupied (by the US) country.

Oh, I expect they still have it. Why would they have sold it when since WWII any time they (the US) wanted money they have been able to just print the stuff.
But whether or not they will ever return it, or simply consider it spoils of war such as Libya's and the Ukraine's, is another question.

Extremely well written article, except for one thing, Waxa Dubaskay, you only IMPLIED that Islam was the problem instead of spitting it right out. Your position seemed to be, that only a fundamentalist form of Islam was the problem, when Islam is a fundamentaluist religion which has no concept of a "liberal" Islam.

Mohammad in his Hadiths claimed that Islam was perfect and could never change or be altered in any way. So nothing less than a full scale attack upon the very scriptures of Islam can shock Muslims out of their zombie like faith. Fortunately, this is starting to happen right now. Mullahs and Imams are squirming while trying to justify the "sword" verses in the Koran and Hadith's to western intellectuals who have the brains to figure out hat Islam is a threat to their very existence.
