"A no-waste Christmas" by Ms. Yule...

irony much. There is a 'tide' in the affairs of women too.

[By the way for those Christians who believe life begins at conception, Christmas should be celebrated in March.]

Christmas celebrates a BIRTHday, which I believe has just passed - 25 December is a date which piggybacks on European pagan mid-winter celebrations.

As for those present ideas, I have yet to find a hand powered torch which provided enough light to see anything bigger or further away than the lock in my front door on a dark night, or that lasted more than a few months, so they just end up in landfill too. A two tiered dish rack? I think a good dishwasher has been proved to be more energy and water efficient than washing up by hand, although they don't confer the same smug holier-than-thou feeling for the user.

No waste Christmas? How about no waste at most times?
Suggestions :

Ban the tabloid newspapers - saves heaps of paper, ink, energy and stops the insults to most peoples intelligence.

Ban those advertising fliers.

Ban crap TV - running 100kW transmitters uses much energy.

Have a book burning ... No, no no ... Sorry.

How cruel Candide, WmTrevor spent days waiting his chance to make a witty comment and hours crafting it 'By the way for those Christians who believe life begins at conception, Christmas should be celebrated in March.' Then you go and shoot it down in three seconds 'Christmas celebrates a BIRTHday'

Valerie I am surprised at you. "the shops are full of stuff which will pause only briefly on its way to landfill."

It may be true, but it is an unkind way to describe Christmas shoppers, or did you have another kind of land fill in mind? We really only stay on this earth slightly longer than a Christmas card.

Does it really matter if a tree dies & falls down in the forest to rot, or if it is turned into wrapping paper, or Christmas cards, giving someone some small pleasure before rotting in a land fill.

Time to lighten up & enjoy life a bit, rather than preaching doom & gloom.
