OLO-ers, be warned. Singer is trying a new tack, bait and switch I thinks it's called.
Having completely failed to convince us of the pureness and righteousness of Israel, he is pretending to be a born-again commentator with a broad array of interests and a balanced view. Be on your guard, methinks. The wolf has thrown a fleece over himself! Posted by David G, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 9:49:16 AM

If it were true David G. what a shame it couldn't be applied to you too.

This marks Assad’s first interview with an American television outlet in nearly two years. The interview was conducted on Sunday, September 8, at the Presidential Palace in Damascus.

The best outcome to the Syrian civil war would be for Assad to heed Obama's warnings and hand over every drop of chemical weapons that he has. He can then get on with the job of exterminating his enemies and we won't give a hoot.
No matter how bad Assad is, his enemies are worse. It all comes down to which oppressive regime in Syria that supports terrorism we would prefer to win. I know that Arjay, David G, and Geoff of Perth have trouble understanding that concept, because they are unable to grasp things like moral perspectives. To these characters, there are only bad guys who oppress good guys, and good guys who are the oppressed, in their tiny minds. Posted by LEGO, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 11:41:04 AM

LEGO I totally agree with EVERYTHING you posted in your comment.
Unfortunately as I visit the pro-Palestinian Blogs and sites, I find many one-eyed people like Arjay, David G. and Geoff of Perth and no matter how much they are confronted with the facts, they will not accept them. As much as I'd like to believe that Assad will hand over his chemical weapons, I think it's a pipe dream. I will be very happy if I am wrong. If the US had struck Syria, though unfortunately it would have killed innocents, he should have just done it. Not given advance warning so that now Assad has moved his rockets out of harm's way and no doubt hidden whatever he could hide.. Posted by SF, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 11:51:18 AM

De Facto "Boots on the Ground"
The devil is in the detail of the "collect or destroy the chemical weapons (CW) proposal". Getting access to the CWs in several locations far into Syria may mean Boots on the Ground of soldiers in Blue (the UN) or Green (Western, Russian, Chinese or Arab military). Boots or Inspectors on the ground need defending against snipers, IEDs and suicide Truck-bombs. Will the extremist groups within the rebels or Hezbollah accept 1,000s of Western "Infidel" Inspectors or their "Boots" protectors spending weeks-months on the ground in Syria? I think we can all think again if we seriously think Putin wants peace.
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/171767#replies Russia has transferred several S-300 missile batteries into Syria, Kuwaiti newspaper Al Rai reported Tuesday. The transfers took place despite statements by Russian officials, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, that Russia would not provide Syria with the advanced anti-aircraft system. Al Rai claimed that Syria has accelerated the rate at which it ships arms into Syria since the current crisis between Russia and the US began, when chemical weapons were allegedly used to kill over 1,000 civilians, on August 21. The information was picked up by Voice of Israel public radio, which added that Russian ships are due to offload more military aid in the next few days. Nothing difficult to grasp at all LEGO. What I find odd and hard to reconcile is how you think that the Israeli, US, Saudi and Qatari support for those 'enemies who are worse' is valid. Assad did not start this military action in his country, it was designed and instigated by third parties, with the tacit support and approval of the governments outlined above. I believe the recent Russian intervention has clearly shown the so-called imperial power of the US to be what it really is, dishonest and losing its geo-strategic policeman status. Clearly US interest has nothing to do humanitarian interests, they would have bombed regardless if that was the mission. This whole episode is about energy and access to it. I agree with Geoff of Perth. It's all about energy and access to it. There is a pipeline waiting to be built from the Gulf States to Europe. Which route will it take? There are oil and gas wells being illegally sunk in the Occupied Golan. Will that be allowed to continue?
If Assad goes along with this, I only hope Russia and China are the overseers of the process. The examples of Hussein in Iraq and Gaddify in Libya show what happens when an Arab nation surrenders its deterrent ability to the West. Posted by halduell, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 2:59:06 PM

No mention of Israel's chemical weapons and 200 nukes.
Let's be truthful. They want to attack Syria because it is ally of Iran and Iran is the big oil prize. Syria is also needed as a pipeline route from Qatar and yes Syria has found oil off shore. Syria and Iran have their own independent banking system that the New World Order does not approve of. Posted by Arjay, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 5:00:00 PM

I do not agree with David Singer assertion that Obama was trying to hog any glory for solving the Syrian chemical weapons problem. Obama has finally done the Churchillian thing and threatened a tyrant with a war unless he hands over his chemical weapons. Like Churchill before him, he sees the need to fight a small war to prevent a much larger one. And like Churchill before him, he is getting all sorts of flak from appeasers and whiners who are unable to comprehend that there are some people in this world who really do want to start a world war.
Just like in Iraq before it, taking the poor man's atom bomb from crazy lunatic regimes is a smart thing to do. If we don't do it, then in ten years time an Al Qaida cell will succeed in smuggling a container of VX, Sarin, or nerve gas into new York, Washington or (hopefully) Canberra, and just like in 9/11 they will kill thousands or even tens of thousands. Then the twits who cultivate reflexive anti American ideas can do mental gymnastics dreaming up conspiracy theories about how Obama wanted a big war all along and how he let Al Qaida get hold of chemical weapons so that he could get re elected. I know that David does not like Obama, but this issue is too important to use for a personnel attack. All David is doing is giving ammunition to the very people on OLO who's worldview he would normally oppose. Posted by LEGO, Thursday, 12 September 2013 6:48:04 AM

Obama's call for a military assault on Syria after the August 21 atrocity was in my view wrong - as I argued in my following article published in OLO on 9 September. http://www.onlineopinion.com.au/view.asp?article=15451 Obama's continued insistence on a military assault after the G20 Summit was again criticised by me in the following article published in OLO on 10 September http://www.onlineopinion.com.au/view.asp?article=15459 After these two articles appeared Kerry's supposed off the cuff remark that so excited Russia was made, the UN Security Council is now being called in to pass a resolution to collect and destroy the chemical weapons and now Obama has postponed the proposed vote in the Congress for carrying out the military assault. To now claim that Kerry's remark was off the cuff and that only the threat of military action brought about a change of heart by Russia and Syria is spin and nothing more. Obama should have dealt with collecting and destroying the chemical weapons in Syria via a UN Security Council Resolution from the very start - not try and blame one side for their use and create the ensuing farce that played out in the British Parliament and was set to be repeated in the American Congress. Obama got it badly wrong on this issue in my opinion which I made clear in the above two articles. For you to make the blanket assertion that I do not like Obama is the kind of generalised unsubstantiated rot that appears so often in remarks posted to my articles. I am surprised that you have engaged in this kind of nonsense. It is par for the course for so many others - but I expected better from you. Obama will be criticised or praised by me on the decisions he makes. In either case I will always substantiate my reasons - as I believe I have done in this instance. Of course I applaud Obama for changing course from what could have led to disaster. But trying to say this happened because he had threatened military action is the stuff folklore is made of. I almost never spend time watching online video messages, because they are usually jerky, incomprehensible and time-wasting. But the two TV talks in Jay of Melbourne's letter will grab the listener all the way through - and at the same time cut a mountain of cackle about the Yanks' endless series of wars of conquest from the very day they forgot the meaning of 1945 up to their present jostling for yet another war for the extinction of yet another independent state.
Recapping, these are Jay's two links: The Truth About How The US Will Save Syria http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-NIOthWsjk Syria, Rwanda and The Bloody Hypocrisy of American Intervention http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBeizRlp3E0 Weld together a dangerously acquisitive elite, an overblown military-industrial-police complex, massive resources, an insatiable hunger for empire and ingrained delusions of exceptional divinely-decreed privilege and you have the kind of empire that would arrange a false flag causus belli, blame it on a targeted regime, brush aside searching questions as if they simply didn't exist - and prepare for forced regime change - and you have the USA which started to gell into a monster and spread its culture worldwide the moment it incorporated the Confederates into its national DNA. The President doesn't represent the USA. Its most conspicuous spokesman today is the war criminal John McCain. The monster can be brought down only by engaging with the healthy tissue that grew from the Enlightenment and imbedded itself its constitution. War crimes can be addressed by globally defining specific crimes, issuing personal warrants - active in perpetuity - for arresting suspects, and extraditing them for trial or, if their authorities illegally refuse extradition, grabbing them the moment they venture outside. A worthy goal towards which to work Posted by EmperorJulian, Thursday, 12 September 2013 4:16:33 PM

To David Singer
Obama's threat to use overwhelming military force on any state that uses chemical weapons on civilians was absolutely right. The threat alone from the world's foremost military power should have been enough to prevent any rogue regime from using these weapons, who's use is totally banned by the UN. Unfortunately, the threat did not work, but I do not hold Obama to blame for trying. Obama's decision to so far stay right out of that conflict is also the right thing to do. We in the west are sick and tired of saving Muslims from their own stupidity, only to have them spit in our faces for our efforts. Somalia and Iraq taught us that saving people who hate us from themselves does not win their friendship. All we end up doing is standing in between two competing factions and getting shot at by both sides. This time they can go at it with my blessings, and I hope they kill each other off. Islamic civilisation is a failure, and it's orthodoxy is intrinsically incompatible with western liberal thought. It is a civilisation which thinks that church and state are inseparable and that priests should be the judges in its courts. It believes that apostates and homosexuals should be murdered. It believes that women are just minors who are the property of males, and that any women who "allows herself to be raped" should be punished. Islam's ban on alcohol is contrary to western social traditions, and it's Koran sanctions the use of military force to spread Islam, another one of its beliefs which are contrary to western thought. Why you perform mental gymnastics trying to defend this evil civilisation, while sneering at your own people is beyond me. I suppose it is just like an adolescent puffing on a cigarette to show the world that he is an adult. People like yourself have convinced themselves that always opposing the interests of your own people is what "intelligent" people do. And that compulsive need to display your intellectual and moral superiority is all that matters to you. Posted by LEGO, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 7:28:08 AM

Your thinking is clearly wrong in regard to the following: 1. Obama did not threaten to use overwhelming military force on Syria. It was to be in the form of carefully targeted air attacks and did not involve boots on the ground 2. Russia disputes that chemical weapons were used by Syria and claims they were used by the rebels. 3. Obama has not decided to stay right out of the Syrian conflict and is still threatening to mount a targeted air attack on Syria if it does not hand over its chemical weapons. 4. Hoping "they kill each other off" indicates a complete lack of any humanity by you in the face of more than 100000 dead, 2 million refugees and 5 million displaced Syrians. 5. Your generalised claim that Islamic civilisation is a failure is unsustainable. Certainly the existence of the 56 existing Islamic member states of the Organization of the Islamic Conference makes your claim laughable. 6. I am not trying to defend this "evil civilisation". I am giving my analysis of what is happening on the ground in Syria based on what the players themselves are saying and where I believe this conflict is heading. 7. Your statement - "People like yourself have convinced themselves that always opposing the interests of your own people is what "intelligent" people do." - must have the Jew haters like David G, Geoff of Perth, mac, arjay, halduell and one under god rolling on the ground with laughter. With your wonderful endorsement I suppose they will soon embrace me as a member of their Jew-haters club Posted by david singer, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 12:13:18 PM

Why so many influential people seem hell-bent on getting involved alarms me and causes me to question their intelligence.
If anything, all steps should be taken to isolate the conflict within the borders of Syria.
It is essentially a Sunni/Shia conflict that has nothing to do with non-muslims. Let them do their dance of death on their own terms.
