The day after Iran goes nuclear : Comments

By Julie Bishop, published 29/3/2012

Iran must explain why it has refused to grant full access to international inspectors if there is nothing to hide.

It would seem the process of disinformation continues.
On the issue of a visit to the Parchin military base during a recent trip to Iran by the IAEA, it has been suggested that the demand to visit reversed a previous agreement that the visit would come later in the process.
http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/NC22Ak01.html
And Senator Carr is to be criticized for suggesting that the threat of war be taken off the table? Hasn't the world had enough of watching the Islamic crescent burn? It is long past time that we take our heads out of those burning sands to see that terrorists are not born, but they surely can be made.
And throughout this continuing process of demonizing Iran, why is it that no is suggesting that Israel open its nuclear facilities to inspection by the IAEA? After all, Iran has signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty while Israel has not.
But then India has never signed it either, and we're about to sell them uranium. I wonder what Ms Bishop thinks about that?

Well I hope the article earns Ms Bishop a nice big fat donation from the support-Israel-at-any-price lobby.

Her attempt to paint a picture of international unity in sanctions against Iran is a joke. The US has recently been allowing western nations such as Japan to continue purchasing Iran's oil as long as they "make an attempt" to reduce imports!

The sanctions are hurting common Iranians rather than the government. The highest religious leader in Iran (where religious fanaticism has the west in a tiz) has declared nuclear weapons to be a sin. Time for Israel to come clean on its nuclear weapons programme and open itself to IAEA inspections.

The Saudis have made it clear they will "go nuclear" if Iran, their strategic rival, does. The Pakistanis will certainly sell them the know how if not the actual equipment.

Turkey is still nominally a member of NATO. In reality it is drifting away from Europe and the US. I cannot imagine Turkey refraining from developing nukes if its neighbour, Iran, has them.

North Korea seems willing to sell nuclear and missile technology to whoever is willing to pay for it. Any country with a reasonable corp of scientists and engineers can purchase the know how.

Pakistan's AQ Khan Network has already sold nuclear technology to many countries including, ironically, Pakistan's strategic rival, Iran.

The idea that Iran, a relatively poor country its oil wealth notwithstanding, would spend such vast sums on developing the technology to enrich uranium far beyond what is needed for electricity generation without having weapons in mind is ludicrous. Truly there are none so blind as those who will not see.

And this from the NY Times, 31 Jan 2011:

>>WASHINGTON — New American intelligence assessments have concluded that Pakistan has steadily expanded its nuclear arsenal since President Obama came to office, and that it is building the capability to surge ahead in the production of nuclear-weapons material, putting it on a path to overtake Britain as the world’s fifth largest nuclear weapons power.>>

See:

Looks like we're headed for a nuclear arms race among Muslim countries.

Should be interesting.

stevenlmeyer,

Iran has wanted a civilian nuclear programme since the time of the US-backed Shah. How do I know? My wife grew up in Iran and watched the Shah say this on TV about 35 years ago. (Yes, they had TV in Iran back then.) The reason the Shah gave was that one day the oil would run out and they would need nuclear power for energy. Oil is post-peak in Iran as it probably is in Saudi Arabia but SA's population is still growing rapidly so they are using more of their own oil domestically. This threatens their export income. Therefore they are considering nuclear energy for their domestic energy needs as are other Middle Eastern nations.

Being able to build nuclear weapons is also a great guarantee against aggression from nations such as the USA, UK and Australia that invade other nations on false pretences, e.g. Iraq leading to hundreds of thousands of deaths. Most sensible commentators believe Iran wants a civilian programme that gives it the "option to go nuclear if provoked" just like our former enemy Japan.

If you want to be afraid of a nuclear nation then look at Pakistan. But no, we can't do that because they are an "ally" in the fight against the Taliban!

It is all a very, very sick joke.
