And to complicate things still further, I just got some Barramundi (from Aldi) out of the freezer, and noticed that it too was farmed in Vietnam!

Hi Paul,

It makes you wonder how many other restaurants
substitute Barramundi with goodness knows what.
We often used to eat at the Anchorage (now Pier
Farm) restaurant in Williamstown. I often ordered
Barramundi. Maybe in the future I'll switch to
something else. Although I suppose anything can
be substituted.

Hi mhaze,

Thanks - but it's too late. We've chucked the basa
out. I was influenced by what I'd read on the web.
I wasn't going to risk it. Mind over matter.
Anyhow, it was only a little over $6.00 dollars.

Hi Aidan,

Thanks for that. My husband did not like the look
of the Rockling next to the Basa in the fish shop. He
said it looked old. The Basa to him looked like
Flounder so he bought the Basa unfortunately.

Sorry to hear about your Barramundi. We're eating Dory
tonight. I've taken that out of the freezer.
I can't find where it was farmed on the package.
Who knows - we may be eating Basa afterall without
knowing it. Maybe it is better not to question things
or know?

Crazy world.

Hi Foxy,

It was once very common for Ling to be substituted for Barramundi, both when filleted are similar in appearance. Although Ling has increased somewhat in price in recent years, and also there is a lot more farmed Barramundi on the market theses days. The farmed variety is not as tasty as the wild animal, a bit like prawns.

mhaze, I think we have some common ground, a liking for fish and seafood in general. One good thing about Basa is its cheapness which allows poor people in the community to have access to "fresh" fish, something generally to pricey to afford. Frozen Basa fillets from Aldi are priced at $7/$8 Kg.

Fish substitution is common, some years back I recall a segment on 'A Current Affair' where they took an expert around the fishmongers, and he identified heaps of substitutions. A bit like a "Texas T-Bone" in the butcher shop, it ain't from Texas and it ain't a T-Bone.

One thing over in NZ for my wife's people, no one goes to the shop to buy seafood, its all caught fresh by the cuzzy-bro's, and it's alway free for 'Aunty and Uncle' and all the other relos who can't go out fishing themselves.

Latest electioneering tripe from the Leftist MP for Warringah trying to cancel the Liberal candidate who is standing for the protection of women from males faking it as females.

80% of Australians support laws that would protect women playing women's sport from being forced to compete against biological males.

But, Steggall MP accuses the PM, who backs such laws, of "intimidating and excluding some of the most vulnerable in society".

What rubbish! It is women and girls who are vulnerable to hulking great men pretending to be women, and the Leftists lunatics like Stegall and others of the Green ilk encouraging them.

I admit that I don't understand what all the fuss
is about with this transgender business in sport.
I would have thought that there are rules and
protections in place to protect women's sport
and these would stand. Medical experts surely would
be able to determine whether someone is or is not
eligible to be counted as a female and should be
allowed to play?

If a male is transitioning into becoming a female -
then surely they are receiving the appropriate
hormones and changes are taking place that makes
them less "male" and therefore takes away their
"Male" supposed advantage? Making them like any
other female competitor.
