Considering that vaccination does not prevent infection - only minimises the symptoms and lessens the spread - then having 75% of the population double-vaxxed would naturally result in skewing the number of cases toward that larger group.
Having three out of every four people in that group is statistically significant. What really matters is the comparative hospitalisation and death rates of the vaxxed and unvaxxed. Posted by rache, Saturday, 15 January 2022 8:17:49 PM

"The statement contains an element of truth but ignores critical facts that would give a different impression. We rate this claim Mostly False."
https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2022/jan/04/facebook-posts/omicron-risk-claim-vaccinated-missing-key-context/ I think that the jist of it is that for all covid variants, being unvaccinated gives a worse outcome. Think of it as a fish tank with several strains of covid. When you catch a strain you are fished out of the tank. The vaccinated are less likely to catch strains other than omicron, but with a booster your immune system is much better at fighting covid of any type. I'm sure that the booster made my neuralgia play up a bit, but it would have been silly of me not to have it. Posted by Fester, Saturday, 15 January 2022 9:20:01 PM

Perhaps you missed that these numbers were per 100,000 of the population, so currently in Scotland, the double vaccinated are more likely to get Omicron, & are more likely to need hospitalisation.
That is a higher percentage of double vaccinated are being infected & need hospital treatment than the unvaccinated. Posted by Hasbeen, Sunday, 16 January 2022 12:06:26 AM

Interesting information Hasbeen. Thanks.

Were there differences between the populations, such as age distribution and risk status? People at higher risk might be more likely to get vaccinated. The devil is in the detail.

Hasbeen,
You didn't provide a link so it's difficult to evaluate, but I suspect your numbers are wrong... http://www.reuters.com/article/factcheck-scotland-statistics-idUSL1N2QQ24L Trying to find or check the numbers on the PHS website is effectively impossible. Basically it seems that health bureaucracies the world over are deliberately making the data on the virus inaccessible. Posted by mhaze, Sunday, 16 January 2022 8:30:50 AM

That's very much like education, achieving the exact opposite !

The population of Scotland is small, about 5.5 million. Trying to draw conclusions from a small base is meaningless. How's things in Luxembourg?
I just hope you are double vaxxed with a booster, Hassy, and don't rely on all that Dangerous Doctor Donald nonsense you like to sprook. Posted by Paul1405, Sunday, 16 January 2022 9:50:53 AM

As with climate change, Covid hysteria has produced so much false information, altered information, and downright lies from incompetent politicians and health bureaucrats, that I refuse to listen to any of it.
Even arch-lefty and ABC political activist, Laura Tingle, is calling for government to 'get out of our faces'. Posted by ttbn, Sunday, 16 January 2022 10:01:23 AM

This was just found, very well buried.
“COVID-19 WEEKLY SURVEILLANCE IN NSW “EPIDEMIOLOGICAL WEEK 52 ENDING 1 JANUARY 2022 “Published 13 January 2022” “Appendix D: Additional tables and figures” Page 29 “Total COVID-19 cases by vaccination status and week reported, NSW, 16 June to 1 January 2022” “Vaccination Status” “Fully vaccinated 72,042 (71%) “Partially vaccinated 671 (1%) “No effective dose 634 (1%) – ( either 21days < since vaxxed, or unvaxxed – not specified ) "Under investigation 19,616 (19%) "Not eligible (aged 0-11 years) 7,874 (8%) "Total 100,837 (100%) Pretty damming. "Twenty-three of those who died had had two doses of a vaccine, one had one dose, eight were unvaccinated, and five had had a booster."
https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/459826/nsw-and-victoria-bring-forward-covid-19-vaccine-booster-to-3-months-queensland-to-open-international-border The message I take from that is that an unvaccinated 5% of the population accounted for 25% of deaths, and if you have had the booster you are 80% less likely to die than if you were double vaccinated. There is more to look at, such as comparing the health of unvaccinated to vaccinated prior to infection. There is a lot of data to assess. Posted by Fester, Wednesday, 19 January 2022 8:08:05 PM

News, the morbidly obese 67 year old Clive Palmer, claims not to be vaxxed. Is Big Clive a ticking time bomb? ALTHOUGH, he may be double vaxxed with a booster to boot. When it comes to spreading lies Clive is a past master.

Looking at these figures from Hasbeen it appears that 21.6% (8/37- 23x d-vaxxed/ 1x s-vaxxed/ 8x unvaxxed/ 5x booster) died unvaxxed and there are 19% unvaxxed ("Under investigation")- so it seems basically on parity to me- within margins of error. ie. It appears from Hasbeen's data that you're just as likely to die from covid "if you have" or "if you haven't" had the jab. I've probably missed something.
There also seems to be some questions of issues with the reporting of deaths of people "with covid" rather than "by covid"- perhaps this evens out over the whole sample- everyone is biased to their own view I suppose. From memory- according to Ben Goldacre's TED talk- pharma companies always seem to get the data they want- strange- even though in theory they have better protocols than independent studies. Of course it doesn't include the figures for vax reactions. Posted by Canem Malum, Friday, 21 January 2022 1:12:45 AM

One thing you are missing is that the data was for Omicron only. For all strains the unvaccinated fared worse. The skepticism of vaccines makes me think that there are some budding chiropractors here.

Sorry, I think you misread that Fester.
The reference to Omicron was that a higher percentage of the vaccinated are catching Omicron than the percentage of unvaccinated catching it. That is vaccination enhances the likelihood of catching it, rather than reducing it, at least in Scotland. Perhaps it's something in the water, or even the whisky. Hassy,
My wife's first cousin, a man about 60 traveled from Sydney to Melbourne by car to visit family at Xmas. Unvaccinated, contracted Covid, now in ICU since late December. Took him off the ventilator yesterday morning and put a tube in his wind pipe. No visitors allowed, doctors hope he'll breath on his own, fingers crossed. AND you know Hassy he's not been anywhere near Scotland. I don't know if in between your guff and reality you are vaxxed or not, BUT I sincerely hope you are for your sake. Keep safe and prosper. The latest stats from NSW show that half of covid deaths aged under 65 years and half of all hospital covid patients were unvaccinated. Less than 5% of the population is unvaccinated.
In light of this data I would not think it likely that omicron is more dangerous for double vaccinated people than it is for unvaccinated people. I suspect the Scottish data reflects a larger number of young patients in the unvaccinated population. Remember that people over seventy are about ten times more likely to die from covid and that children, the least vulnerable age group, were the last to receive vaccinations. Personally I am very worried for the safety of people I know who are refusing covid vaccination, especially as I have not found the information on which they base their choice to be either informed or rational. Here is a video link to one antivaxxer nutcase who my friends prefer to the medical advice to get boosted and vaccinated: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keQzLV4LEUc Posted by Fester, Friday, 21 January 2022 6:45:16 PM

Hospitalisation rate was also twice as high in the double-jabbed compared to the unvaccinated – 130 admissions per 100,000 versus 59 per 100,000 – but fell to just 15 per 100,000 in the triple-jabbed.
It also shows that contrary to expectations the 20 to 24 age group are twice as likely to be infected as the next, 15 to 19, & 5 times as likely as all other age groups combined.
It might be time to renew the old advice, "Mothers lock up your daughters" If all these young women weren't running around all over the place, all the young blokes wouldn't be out there chasing them, infecting each other all the time. Certainly better advice than to get vaccinated it would appear since Omicron, & if you've been "fully" vaccinated, go get the booster, you are more at risk than anyone else, until you do, apparently.
