Post graduate students at Oxford's Magdalene College have voted for the removal of a portrait of the Queen from their common room after these geniuses deemed the portrait to be "an unwelcoming symbol of 'recent colonial history'".

ttbn, can you think up a more boring topic than this one. Who cares what the mob at some Pommy college have hanging on their wall. After all its their common room and their wall, whatever. Why don't you start a really interesting discussion, like 'Basket Weaving for Fun and Profit' all you lads down at 'The Shady Pines Retirement Village' could sink your (false) teeth into that one.

The halfwits involved clearly did not learn of the positives of the British Empire that now independent Commonwealth countries are still enjoying: rule of law, justice systems, and social development of indigenous people. India, Australia, Canada, New Zealand are beneficiaries.

The Queen's father presided over decolonisation before HM became Queen. There is no way that she could be said to symbolise colonisation. During her reign, the remnants of the Empire all became equal partners in the Commonwealth. And I'll bet the people of Hong Kong wish they still had the protection of the Crown.

Oxford University's post grad. students vote to
remove the Queen's picture from their common
room? Well a vote was taken but apparently almost
half abstained. I understand that the common room
of the college is separate from the university and
belongs to the students. So they can do as they
more or less please.

I personally find it rather odd. The University is
in the UK. And is one of the oldest in the world.
It is known for its "Britishness" so to speak and for being
a fine institution of learning. The Queen is the British
monarch who at present is going through a difficult time
and to do this act to me is blatantly not "cool."
Very un British. The university should have stepped in
and not allowed this to happen.

Hopefully the students will change their minds. Someone
needs to have a quiet chat with them.

Dear Paul,

It's quite easy to misjudge someone especially if
their viewpoints differ from yours at times. I think
if we were to meet each other in person we just
may realise how much we actually do have in common
on so many things. In any case there have been
times when we've shared quite a few thoughts
and did not disagree.

Personally we can't control what someone thinks of us,
but we can at least try not to deliberately offend
them. Now, I sound like I'm preaching. I don't mean
to do that - just sharing a few thoughts early in the
morning. Bear with me.

Regarding the students at Oxford? Perhaps they were
of a diverse group and wanted to send a message to
the university about allowing more diversity within
its ranks - hence their "protest" regarding the
Queen's portrait. I'm just taking a guess here.
In any case - originally the students wanted the
portrait. Now they've changed their minds. But not
all of them. Almost half abstained from the vote.
So it wasn't unanimous. We'll have to wait and see
what comes next. I think it was a silly thing to
do but then I don't know the politics involved
on that campus.

Hi Foxy,

I find the folks on the forum, not a bad bunch at all, that includes those of all persuasions. I give a bit of stick, and cop a bit in return or vice-versa, but all in all its nothing personal. My wife says I'm "uninsultable", and she says if I had to marry a pakeha it would have to be me. She tells me I'm passable (just) at times, scores me 51 out of 100, but she does think I have a few screws loose, as demonstrated by my participation in this forum. I have many interesting and varied friends and acquaintances from all parts, all backgrounds and of all social and political leanings. Then again if we were all the same it would be a rather boring old world.

Just on this topic, I note we have many, many photos, paintings including one of Te Aroha done by Australia's leading pop artists, and given to her by a couple of close friends, all around the house, its a Maori thing, lots of pic on walls in their whare's (houses), something in their culture. However there's not one pic of the Queen of England, or the Pope for that matter. Where have we gone wrong.

I see something in this, if the students had voted to remove a pic of Daffy Duck hanging on their wall, would some old crusty conservative in Aussie me making a ruckus about it, me thinks not. Why then? Its because the Queen represents the establishment, he believes in, that's what is seen as being attacked, and not just some dear old stick from the house of Windsor.

Dear Paul,

I didn't have a picture of the Queen or the Pope growing
up either on any walls. Although dad did buy mum a
Royal Dalton dinner set - which was a big deal at the time.
And we did have Lithuanian folk art as well - to which I
later added paintings by a few Australian artists. The
water colours of the Aboriginal artist Ronald Bull were my
favourites as was Mal Gilmour's stark outback visions.

Regarding the Oxford students? They probably were making
some sort of political point. But I don't think it was
a majority decision. And surely they could have come up
with something better - targeting the Queen makes it
somehow personal and unnecessary. She rarely interferes
in politics. And where would the UK be without their
royals? Think of the tourism they bring in. Good for
the economy. The royals to the UK are like the Disneylands of
the US.

The upcoming monarch, now, should get treated with derision, and will undoubtedly stir the Australian republicans into action; even the Brits might think about it.

Prince Charles has done his usual politicisation of the Royals by calling, at the G7, for the same oppressive action taken during the WuFlu to be applied to climate change. Oh, they say, he knows that he won't be able to talk the crap of commoners when he is king, but the damage has been done. Charles has, most of his life, done more damage to the Crown than have Edward V111, Prince Andrew and Prince Ginger put together.

Future generations will look back on carbon dioxide-caused climate change as the biggest hoax ever perpetrated on gullible humans; if they are taught about it, that is, and if they are not too busy coping with the fraudsters and rent-seekers of their own age.

That the by-then King Charles was mixed up in it will be a source of horror.

I don't think Charles will ever be king.
My bet's on Prince William. And for the Brits
to give up their royals? Not in my lifetime.
They've been through all sorts of scandals
in the past and managed to not only survive
but thrive. After all - "They're British
you know." (smile).

Hi Foxy,

I don't think owning a 'Royal Dalton' dinner set qualifies one as a royalist, however one never knows, for some it might be enough to tip them over the edge.

Must thank ttbn for this most interesting and riveting discussion, what will he think up next? If it wasn't for you and me, us pair he classes as "persona non grata", no one else gave a toss. ttbn pick up your weekly copy of 'No Idea' magazine, its packed full of royaly stuff for you.

Good Morning Paul,

Dad bought our Royal Dalton dinner set for mum.
She was a staunch admirer of the British. She
wanted to live to be 100 so she could get a
letter from the Queen. Mum made it to 96.
Dad on the other hand did not share mum's
feelings about the royals.

Don't joke about the Women's mags. I buy the
Australian Women's Weekly regularly. Mum got me
hooked years ago. Woman's Day as well - I enjoy
the crossword puzzles, and the gossip. - silly, I know.
But there you go.

Hi Foxy,

My wife will buy those women mags, catch up on the royal gossip etc. My Old Man, was strange in that he was a socialists, "Pig Iron' Bob was the enemy of the working class, yet he was pro royalty. Mum was a Catholic, she didn't go that much on the Queen and that sort of thing, must have been a hang over from the days of Henry VIII.

Personally I'm a Republican (not the Donald Trump verity), but I don't knock myself out over the issue. There are many issues far granter and more important that this, although one day Australia will be a republic...maybe.

Hi Paul,

I guess whether we become a Republic or not will
be decided by future generationsa. I think it won't
happen while the Queen is still alive. Australians
are a "weird mob," as Nino Cullota put it. We're a
nation that may be able to distinguish between an
Italian and an Englishman, but many still assume
that people with "foreign names" need an interpreter
to understand English.

We have the Pauline Hanson rant about the imaginary
spectre of foreigners taking over Australia while
she ignores the real problems in our communities -
the unemployment, binge-drinking, gambling, drugs,
homelessness, poverty, domestic violence.
And the spin continues.

Yet she doesn't talk about the little Sudanese child's
distress when asked by an old person, "Why did you come to
Australia and when are you going back?"

It transpires that the half-witted Phd student who tabled the motion to dump the Queen's portrait is an American. Just the sort of foreign student Oxford needs to be more careful about.

Oxford's Chancellor has labelled him and the other ratbags as 'offensive and obnoxiously ignorant'. Rather different from lot who mismanage our universities, who generally keep mum or side with the students.

I'm not an expert on this but it seems that the Unions objections to Japanese imports of iron were not because of the Sino-Japanese War but because the Japanese were fighting Communists. The union objections to Communist Chinese killings were perhaps more muted. "We shall overcome"- indeed.

But the unions seem to have diverged from their traditions.

Backups ensure that your critical data will survive any of the likely hazards. Too many individuals and companies have suffered from having their hardware lost or stolen, destroyed by fires or natural disasters, infected with malware or corrupted by targeted hacker attacks. Common sense dictates that all hard drives will eventually fail; the question is whether or not you are prepared for the worst-case scenario.

Hi ttbn and Indy,

My last comment on this boring topic was 11th June, when I suggested to Foxy that maybe that dead old Prince Phil could return and haunt the students common room, no one took up that suggestion. From then on my few posts were off topic, mostly a chat to my forum friend Foxy. In fact I don't see much discussion on the topic at all. Why? Because its another one of ttbn's boring non issues!

The removal of the Queen's portrait at the
Oxford University's Post Graduate Student's
Common Room was totally unnecessary and it
was not a majority decision anyway - merely at
the suggestion of a foreign student. It should not
have happened. Hopefully - the portrait shall be
re-instated. Oxford is one of the oldest universities
and is a symbol of British excellence in education.
The Queen is UK's monarch - and this is appropriate
to have her portrait there. I believe that the student
who objected to the portrait was an American - I wonder
how he would feel to have some of the American icons
removed from certain places in his country?
