Yes it's heartless. But at least there's a logically sound reason behind it, unlike certain other parts of our immigration system (such as the extreme discrimination against those who come here by boat after our bureaucracy has, through no fault of their own, prevented them from coming here by other means).
It's reasonable to want our immigration system to be profitable, but severely disabled children cost a lot to look after. So although I think the status quo is too restrictive, I haven't been able to identify a better solution yet. Posted by Aidan, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 1:43:58 PM

The parents are not citizens, and being born here does not make the child a citizen. It beats me why some people get dewy-eyed and sanctimonious about aliens after the way all Australian governments have treated their own citizens during the China virus. It appears that the father came here as a student, got the missus out, had the child, and wanted to stay.
A very familiar back door immigration rort. There will be much wailing and whining from the usual suspects, and the nonsense will go on for years. The High Court will eventually be involved, and they will be sent to Christmas Island where the last couple to have children here after they were told it wouldn't help their cause are languishing until they get the message and go home. What a shocking waste of Australian time and resources. How dare these people come here and presume to be exempt from Australian law. Posted by ttbn, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 2:04:08 PM

NathanJ it will be time to poor your sympathy over foreign blow ins, when we have enough money in our health system to look after our own.
I have a neighbor who needed a knee replacement 7 years ago. It took 3 years from the time he was refereed for him to actually see a specialist. Keeps the waiting list shorter if you haven't had a consultation yet. They mucked him around for another 3 years, before actually scheduling an operation. After the final consultation with the anesthetists & surgeon, they canceled him with some bulldust. He can now just manage 30 meters with a walker, to the front gate to check his mail, but needs a rest before coming back. He has tried & found my new mobility scooter would be great, but he has no where to keep one. Even if he can afford it, at the lower price I managed to get mine for, he would need a car port or garden shed near his door to keep it in. While we have large numbers of cases like him, it is not time to start splashing tax payers cash around for the next 60 or 70 years, just to make you feel good. Hi Nathan,
I agree deporting a family because a child has a disability is a heartless act. Compassion is one of the measures of a nations self worth. In the grand scheme of things the instance of what has transpired with this family is rare , Kayaan through no fault of his was born with cerebral palsy, he is now 6 years old and in need of our help. Hassy, if we show compassion for this family, or we do not, it doesn't relate to the outcome for your neighbour. I was appalled by the treatment of the Biloela family Tamil refugees imprisoned on Christmas Island by a heartless government trying to make a political point. http://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/feb/16/biloela-tamil-family-to-remain-on-christmas-island-after-federal-court-upholds-ruling-on-daughters-visa Posted by Paul1405, Wednesday, 24 March 2021 6:18:38 AM

This applies to the Katyal family and their son, Kayaan.

Why a Government would want to deport children and send them elsewhere as they have a disability, plus see them as a cost burden is something I find difficult to live with as it is simply 'heartless'.
I struggle to understand why Australia has a Prime Minister who seems to lack compassion here, yet claims to be Christian. This type of approach is not something I would see most Christians supporting.
Australia should be here to support people, all people, including those with disabilities. They are not just a disposable asset. They have a heart, soul and personal feelings... just like everyone else!
