In order to pre-empt Mopie's dainty wisdom.
A $multi-Billion Chinese city in Daru would match the $multi-Billion 99 year Chinese lease of Darwin Port nicely. Bring-on: - China's Darwin-Daru (D-D) airlines - D-D shipping lines - China's right via Daru right to prime Australian fishing rights - a D-D undersea gas pipeline, and - a D-D undersea communications cable. Who said D-D worthies can't be bought?! Posted by plantagenet, Monday, 8 February 2021 8:50:13 AM

I bet that mob that wanted to build the PNG-Australia gas pipe line several years back will now be glad they didn't !

I seem to recall that some years back Daru was described as the most violent place on Earth !

@indi
You speakum truth. Chinese newchums in Daru will need to send a fair wad of cash to its police force to quell high rates of crime. Australia's DFAT Travel Advisory for PNG is http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/destinations/pacific/papua-new-guinea? "Risk of violent crime and sexual assault in PNG is high. Criminals often use 'bush knives' (machetes) and guns." Daru stars in: - http://png.embassy.gov.au/pmsb/553.html and at - http://www.facebook.com/pngpolicebrutality/posts/daru-policedrinking-alcohol-while-still-on-duty-and-in-full-uniformits-uncertain/2151047245016908/ Posted by plantagenet, Monday, 8 February 2021 9:53:41 AM

Not much we can do on our own: we can try to offer PNG a better deal, otherwise we need to ask the Americans to build a large military base on our opposite shore.
Darwin is a very different story - there we must immediately take over and kick out the Chinese. Posted by Yuyutsu, Monday, 8 February 2021 2:22:23 PM

Paul1405,
I TOLD YOU SO. It's all part of Chinese expansionism aimed at creating a Communist Chinese Empire. I assume the million plus residents of New Daru City will mostly Chinese of course. And don't forget: the enemy is already inside the gates. Posted by Mr Opinion, Monday, 8 February 2021 4:11:38 PM

PS. They're already inside the gates because people like Foul-Mouth let them in!

They're already inside the gates because people like Foul-Mouth let them in!
Mr Opinion, Yes and, the gates were swung open by Goaf & pal Grasby, courtesy of Labor voters years back. Many of us predicted the scenario playing out since but the Leftist media & Leftists in general always did their utmost to ridicule those with foresight ! A very large number of them are the anti-National Service crowd ! Now they're starting to get scared ! Posted by individual, Monday, 8 February 2021 7:13:50 PM

individual,
Watching the Chinese encroachment is like watching a plague of locusts gathering on the horizon. I TOLD YOU SO. Posted by Mr Opinion, Monday, 8 February 2021 7:28:18 PM

A radio report said that when the PNG PM was asked about the Daru
development and said he did not know about it. Possibly correct, it could be a repeat of the seizure of Philippine Islands in the South China Sea. Could sometime in the distant past a Chinese ship have landed on Daru and claimed it for its Emperor ? Considering its position in Torres Strait it does have military relevance. I cannot see any other interest that China would have in Daru. Australia should ask the PNG Army to establish a joint base on Daru. Posted by Bazz, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 6:19:33 AM

Bazz,
China's got the money and where the money is PNG will go. I saw this coming and as you all now know: I TOLD YOU SO. Posted by Mr Opinion, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 6:30:13 AM

Australia should ask the PNG Army to establish a joint base on Daru. Bazz,
Australian Navy & Customs vessels are constantly in the area, mere kilometres away. What they do is anyone's guess whilst the PNG dinghies buzz around them. Joining the Armed Forces & the reserves is very popular among the islanders. Their mollycoddled cousins in the South could definitely learn about discipline, responsibility & respect from them ! I do not support any political faction. But I would like to see a world in which there is no place for low-life scumbags. Posted by Mr Opinion, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 11:54:36 AM

This is a serious business. Australia MUST use its influence in PNG to stop it. PNG should realise it wont mean jobs for PNG because like else where they will employ Chinese contractors who employ Chinese people. That way the money doesn't leave China!
Once there PNG wont be able to stop them building a base like those in the SCS. Posted by INDEPENDANT Al, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 1:57:55 PM

INDEPENDANT Al,
45 years is too many years of chances we missed to remedy the situation. Too late now. The best we can hope for is that we never get a repeat of 1975 when the decisions were made that haunt us now ! Australia's been handing $1.2 Million/day to PNG since then & now we worry about them inviting China in exchange for more money ? Isn't that sufficient proof that it'd become unaffordable for Australia to vie for the affection for want of a better description of PNG ? Posted by individual, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 7:21:38 PM

I TOLD YOU SO
I told you weeks ago that I thought Dazza's gal was cracking her neck to get the international border open so that they could bring tens of thousands of Chinese into the country. Well here's the proof: http://www.msn.com/en-au/news/other/prioritising-international-students-over-australians-is-just-bloody-crazy/ar-BB1dskKX Yes . . . . . . . . . Mr Opinion got it right again! Mr Jones said the "number one priority" is to "get our Australians back home".
Mr Opinion, They didn't consider Australia that important when they left & stopped paying Tax here ! Posted by individual, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 7:50:21 AM

individual,
So what? I think from the above that it looks like Dazza's gal has prioritised Chinese migrants above Australians wanting to come home. I think it is not a good look unless one is in the pro-China camp. I'm sure Foul-Mouth will be happy with the situation. Posted by Mr Opinion, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 8:35:25 AM

Mr O,
You did TELL US SO! So far I think the best suggestion to deal with the Chinese and New Daru City is mine, that is send the ScumO' glove puppet Simon Birmingham over with a plate of lamingtons as a neighbourly gift. Do you think it would be to forward of Australia if Simon went armed with a couple of packets of Iced VoVo's as well? Just a thought to break the ice, and that's about the biggest threat we can put up anyway. Lots of Aussie pollies will be sweating on an invite to the "open house" when New Daru City kicks off, they all want to be there. As my Old Man said to me 50 years ago; "The Chinese owe us nothing! We've done stuff all for them, besides, they know how to look after themselves!" Posted by Paul1405, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 10:20:36 PM

Just had a call from an island chap who told me that Chinese fish buyers have been on several islands for up to five years & taking the product to Daru.
Also just started reading a book from 1912 in which the author writes about northern Australia; In face of the fact that this portion of our island continent is Australian in name only, does it not behove to us to bestir ourselves and prove to the world that we are worthy of the great inheritance, lest some foreign power, making our lethargy an excuse, step in and use it for us ? Welcome aboard mate. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-02-10/png-daru-fishing-park-china-australia-tensions-james-marape/13136188 And if you get tired of Daru just mosey on down to Sydney. Yes, it's Chinese too! Posted by Mr Opinion, Thursday, 11 February 2021 7:17:06 AM

A "Chinese company" has proposed the building of a multi-billion-dollar city on the Papua New Guinean island of Daru, 200km from Australia, New Daru City will cover a 100 sq Km area. The city will include an industrial zone, seaport, business and commercial zone, along with a resort and residential area to start, what can we expect in the future? According to the company PNG will grant an agreed Sovereign Guarantee based on a long-term BOT [Build Operate Transfer] contract". According to a PNG government spokesperson; "If a foreign investor wants to come to PNG with multi-million kina investments, PNG will not stop them ... on the condition our legal laws are complied with and local Papua New Guineans benefit."
My concern would firstly be PNG relinquishing sovereignty of Daru to the Chinese for an agreed period, the Chinese are likely to find reasons not to return the island in the future. For Australia, the consequences can be most serious, having a somewhat unfriendly power positioned on our doorstep. China is unlikely to stop at PNG, Indonesia and the Pacific Island nations are also likely future targets. Should China fail to comply with those PNG "legal laws", what should PNG do....declare war!
BTW Not sure where Old Daru City is, but if any of the inhabitants kick up a fuss about the building of New Daru City, the Chinese will soon shut them up.
