A pattern is emerging: the people who spread the virus tend to be the cleaners, the care workers in aged care facilities. The reason they tend to spread the virus is that in order to make ends meet they work in multiple jobs. They are paid very little because as a society we think a bank manager is worth a lot more than a humble cleaner or the person who wipes the bums of dementia patients. I suspect that the problem is that we have our priorities wrong - we would be a lot safer if it was the bank manager who had to work multiple jobs.

The original infections come from overseas, thanks to our gormless politicians who are more concerned about bringing 'poor bubba' Australians home instead of protecting the majority of Australians content to live and work in their own country. These disease carriers should be told to stay where they are until it's completely safe for them to return. Quarantining in hotels (or anywhere else) is not working.

The socialist rant about how little some workers are paid is the real reason for the misinformation on the China virus, which has been given the weasel word of 'corona' as a suck up to the original culprits, the Chinese Communist Party.

Careful there BAYGON, your ideology is leading you astray. To be a bank manager requires more than a little learning & training & intelligence to absorb both. The bank manager then has the ability to both save & make their employer a reasonable amount of money.

Although there is no reason that a smart person could not be a cleaner or bum wiper, they mostly choose professions requiring higher intelligence & education, if only because they are mostly a more pleasant way to spend your days, & offer higher return.

Obviously a job requiring little training or intelligence to perform is going to attract lower wages than jobs requiring both.

Obviously ttbn is right. We owe nothing to those who have chosen to live in other countries. It is ridiculous to keep bringing infection into the country with those who only want to return to take advantage of our low infection rates.

When I was cruising the Pacific islands I carried a radio with a range of only about 50 miles, & never reported my departure or intended destination to any one. I believe that those who choose to go gallivanting off around the ocean have no right to expect someone else to come & fetch them if they get into trouble.

In the same way, those who choose to move to another country have no claim on Oz when their dream goes belly up. As you make your bed, so shall you lie is a good axiom.

Perhaps the lesson staring us in the face is that jobs like cleaning, aged care and quarantine security DO need education and training?

At minimum: the basics of infectious disease causation and transmission, methods of control, disinfection and sanitation, food health security, side-effects of control measures especially chemicals, and perhaps a bit of history, cautionary tales, of past pandemics (and food poisoning outbreaks), why they happened, how they were controlled, and what we learnt (or not) from them.

Yes, Cossomby,

Better training, more responsibility and recognition, and therefore higher wages and greater job security - and so less need for multiple 'casual' jobs, and a much-needed end to musical-chair staffing in aged care and so many other settings.

Win,win.
