TheY used strong arm tactics on bosses and promised big pay rises for construction workers
At about this time the AWU had gone in to an amalgamation , it was rocky and nearly failed
Bill Shorten old school AWU, like myself, held us together
Federal industrial relations court heard a challenge from the CFMEU trying to take AWU coverage
I was a key witness, we won, still a delegate then that union, unseen for ten years, had one member in an area of 350 klm, my union had near thirty,EX cfmeu, each had asked me could they join us[over 300 members]
We took them
Soon civil construction workers gained 5 8 and even more percent for each of three year terms [enterprise agreements last three year mostly]
BUT warnings workers priced themselves out of a job, went unheard
TODAY few, very few, full time jobs are held, high wages forced by militants, introduced casual workers on much lower pay out numbering the few full timers
thank you CFMEU
