Answer-
There was a doctor who promoted the Tabula Rasa - Sexual Blank Slate Theory- was promoted as a pioneer after surgery on a hermaphrodite to remove their male sex organ who as an adult had gender reasignment surgery- this pioneer doctor was later discredited- this serves as a warning to those in frontier fields. This led to a better understanding of the role of testosterone in gender assignment in the brain during pregnancy. When facing the unusual case of hermaphrodite births the "do no harm" constraint is challenged- perhaps the unusual case study above is exceptional- but the desire for the children to be accepted and perceived as normal fits with Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.

While I can understand the doctors dilemma in this case I am cautious of ascribing simplistic solutions such as gender reassignment in normal circumstances due to the "do no harm" principle. The doctors and psychologists straddle the fence between psychological gender issues and psychopathology- I'm not sure mans understanding of the brain is sufficient to delineate between them.

I find the psychological and integrity issues somewhat problematic when gender acknowledgement leads to lack of acceptance within society. Some have said that Liberalism focuses on the first two levels of Maslow's Hierarchy and dumps the rest. Maybe we should do as our ancestors advised- teach people to try to fit in on one side- and try to be patient on the other

Some interesting articles - one by Steven Pinker- I see him as a Liberal but he has some redeeming arguments. Similarly Psych Today seems to be fairly left editorially.
