Australian politics for some time now. And there
have been other aspects of contemporary politics
that have made ordinary voters uncomfortable - from
being open to moving Australia's embassy in Israel
from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, to allowing children to
remain in offshore detention centres for years to name
just a few.
We have the bizarre sway enjoyed by radio shock jocks
and tabloid newspaper journalists to the hermetically sealed
bubble that seems to insulate our politicians from the
concerns of everyday citizens.
And now we have this act - where Australia chose to vote
with the United States and Israel - the only UN member
states out of 193 to vote - against the Palestinian
delegation being able to chair the upcoming Group of 77
meetings on October 16th.
I guess this could have been predicted - what with the
Wentworth election being on the horizon at that time,
plus another election looming in May 2019. The Jewish
Lobby is powerful. And the government needs votes for
(and plenty of donations) for its survival.
However it's not all bad news - shameful as it is -
there were 146 countries who voted in favour of the action
(15 countries abstained). This will grant the Palestinian
Delegation some official status and additional privileges
at the assembly.
The Palestinians will now be procedurally acting more like
a full UN member state during the 2019 G77 meetings, among
developing nation member states. China will also be in
attendance.
As for the Australian government's decision in this matter -
it will be interesting to see whether this will affect our
trade relations with Indonesia and other countries?
