You do not change an unfair system by consolidating unfairness. You are quite right there are a range of quite arbitrary factors which discriminate against people. I see no justification for differentiating between singles and married folk - a fair tax system can iron out any 'wrinkles'.
So I agree with you that the way singles and married folk are treated is fundamentally unfair but that of itself is no reason to argue that we should remedy that by maintaining another layer of unfairness.
