Mr Alpers...(Kiwi) another graduate of the CIA trained Dr Rebecca Peters - School for Patsies and Gun Control.
From: http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/cp/australia "From the reports in which numbers were published, a total of 948,388 firearms were surrendered to police for destruction. Of these, 67,488 (7.1%) were collected before the federal long-gun buyback which followed the 1996 Port Arthur tragedy. In the 1996-97 National Firearms Buyback of rapid-fire long guns (mainly semi-automatic rifles but also self-loading and pump-action shotguns) and in the 2003 National Handgun Buyback which followed, Australians gave up for destruction 728,667 newly prohibited firearms in return for market-value compensation. Having measured the scale of the Australian experiment with more accuracy, I have found that at least 219,721 additional firearms were surrendered for destruction – a number which until now has been untallied and largely unrecognized. Although the Australian initiative was most often described as a "buyback" in which gun owners received cash compensation, of all the weapons handed in for destruction since 1988, nearly one in four yielded no financial return to its owner (Alpers and Wilson, 2013). Such was the swing in public opinion that large numbers of gun owners sent lawfully held firearms to the smelter, even when there was no obligation to do so." Makey - learney 'Professor' Alpers, who wouldn't know a butt stock from a bullet is now Australia's pre-eminent "expert" on matters pertaining to gun control and the emerging Guru post Peters. See: http://elissahawke.blogspot.com.au/2011/06/nwo-port-arthur-massacre-mass-shootings.html and: http://www.toben.biz/2013/10/joe-vialls-ari-and-jim-stone-in-the-mouse-that-roared/ "Curiouser and curiouser" - said the Walrus to the Seal! Waaay too much detail and fact (along with evidence) was never ever tendered at Martin Bryants stitch up. Much more has since disappeared. My bet is that yet another "mass shooting" is about to happen in the USA. Posted by Albie Manton in Darwin, Tuesday, 17 January 2017 4:24:30 PM

This little snippet from Peter's essay (first link by Albie)
" As outlined in the essay by Rebecca Peters (in this volume), in the late 1990s all Australian states and territories agreed to new uniform legislation," 20 years on and the legislation is still not uniform, example (one of many): Fired, inert empty cartridge cases are scrap metal in most States but in Western Australia it is an offence to possess even one fired case. One wonders where Dr. Peters got her information from, certainly not from rigorous academic research of the level required of first year undergraduates. The biggest hurdle to 'uniform gun laws' is the lawyers themselves. God forbid that any affront to their Golden Goose is challenged by bringing in sensible, easy to read i.e. Plain English legislation, let alone something vaguely resembling uniform road rules across this nation.
That it can take weeks and even years to obtain through the courts an extradition order for criminals to be moved from one jurisdiction to another speaks of the cumbersome, anachronistic systems in play. Federation anyone ? Posted by Albie Manton in Darwin, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 9:39:33 AM

Philip Alpers is well known in his birthplace, New Zealand.
""Professor" Philip Alpers unmasked. Published in NZG&J Issue #90 Sept/Oct 05 A number of incredulous shooters contacted SSANZ to ask how, in a recent NZ Herald article on firearm problems in Papua New Guinea, (04.07.05), anti-gun lobbyist Philip Alpers managed to be described at least eight times as “Professor Alpers”. Surely this was in jest? We were pretty amazed ourselves at Alpers new title. In July 1991 his academic record was laid out in startlingly different terms by Deborah Coddington, (now the MP, but then a writer for North & South magazine): Alper’s late mother is quoted directly; “I remember (Philip) coming to me when he’d failed UE and asking if he had to go to university, and I said, “For God’s sake no”. If that was his attitude to university, he’d better stay home”. However, Alpers must have had a partial change of mind as he told Coddington then that he “sat in on lectures at university without enrolling”. Now let’s keep in mind that a professorship normally entails 8 or 9 years study to obtain a doctorate and several more years post-doctoral research at a tertiary institution. Was Alpers perhaps trading on an honorary doctorate in a manner that one of our MP’s was recently chastised for?" Few voters support more centralisation of power in Canberra. The home insulation scandal is one example of the rarified atmosphere in Canberra and the feds stuffing up.
Also, Canberra's politicians excel at political populism and obfuscation, ducking any serious issue (and ministerial responsibility!) and are particularly averse to long-term planning. They excel at travelling overseas and finding ways to extend their pay and entitlements. 'Professor' Alpers? http://ssaa.org.au/news-resources/know-your-opponent/philip-alpers-a-most-dubious-researcher/ and http://corregidor.org/acgq/web_redirect_3628.3645.8883/forum_pages/article_alpers.html Sydney University may have some explaining to do if 'research' is not being properly peer reviewed, specifically by being published in academic publications of substance. Where is the professional academic scrutiny/QA by Sydney University? If Sydney University cannot find anyone with a recognised level of academic attainment and relevant expertise, there are other universities who can help it out. The following two links give Mr Alpers background
and experience: http://theconversation.com/profiles/philip-alpers-150554 http://www.sydney.edu.au/medicine/people/academics/profiles/philip.alpers.php Of course some may prefer what Shooters Associations have to write about Mr Alpers and his expertise. Or if in doubt one can always contact the university and organisations to which the man belongs. Posted by Foxy, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 10:35:27 AM

Foxy,
"Of course some may prefer what Shooters Associations have to write about Mr Alpers and his expertise. Or if in doubt one can always contact the university and organisations to which the man belongs" The shooter's organization was using quotes from a newspaper articl by a respected journalist and later an MP and Sydney Uni will not reveal why it granted Alpers some status nor will Alpers reveal who his referees were. Your first reference gives no information of substance, "Experience: 2004–present. Adjunct Associate Professor, Sydney School of Public Health, University of Sydney". His paper on firearms in New Guinea has been shewn to be a biased, self promotion rant. Posted by Is Mise, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 10:53:50 AM

Dear Is Mise,
I find his background quite remarkable. Obviously you don't. Would you still think the same way if the man was pro guns and anti their control? Posted by Foxy, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 11:27:12 AM

Foxy,
No I wouldn't, the man is a fake and a self promoting fraud. The University does itself a disservice by promoting him and his views, couldn't they find anyone with some academic qualifications? Posted by Is Mise, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 11:33:11 AM

Dear Is Mise,
The man's background and his experiences have been accepted by many reputable organisations and institutions of learning. He cannot be what you claim he is. It's that simple. Posted by Foxy, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 11:42:42 AM

//The University does itself a disservice by promoting him and his views, couldn't they find anyone with some academic qualifications?//
So those on the right can rubbish them as 'Ivory Tower Academics' in the same way that they do for everybody else with more education than themselves? Posted by Toni Lavis, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 4:55:06 PM

Foxy, Is Mise, we all have much to be afraid of from the MSM - more than any other entity, as they have the influence over a misinformed populace. Politics, agendas, barrows full of idealism and not fact drives what is broadcast and published...it is all about "perception management".
The proliferation of firearms in the Australian environment only became an 'issue' when politicians knee jerk reactions - based on flawed, skewed and 'faulty research' (read: paid for by vested interests) was acted upon. There is at best far too much fact and evidence omitted from the legal proceedings regarding mass shootings, culminating in the Port Arthur Massacre, itself an engineered and concocted event. How many of us today doubt the veracity of the intelligence which led up to the 2nd Gulf War and the War On Terror i.e. WMD's. In the years I've been posting my opinions here on OLO, there have been some good arguments put up and some really dodgy ones...with links to back it all up. I recently posted some rather conflicting http links on another thread regarding the PAM. I am of the firm belief, having myself personally requested in writing - court documents, forensic reports and such from the Tasmanian DPP when studying law in 2003, that much will never ever see the light of day regarding the terrible incident that was Port Arthur precipitating the Buy Back and current legislation. It behoves us all to ask, even if at the end of the day Mr Martin Bryant is complicit in any way (which I strongly doubt given his mental capacities and lack of firearms proficiency), the question that no one wants to ask - "Where was justice served ?" I am so glad that at least in Australia we don't have capital punishment at this time in our history. In any fair assessment of the events and reasonable persons mind it was nothing short of a kangaroo court. I say again: "Perception management" and ask in all humility, "What are the vested interests hoping to achieve ?" Posted by Albie Manton in Darwin, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 5:00:29 PM

As I understand it, the position of adjunct lecturer, or associate professor, or professor, is unpaid, and often awarded to people with no academic qualifications, as a sort of honorific title. They are not expected to actually do anything. But they have an office, a desk and access to a phone and computer.

Interesting stuff. Lets look at the facts.
Institutions of Learning do not offer positions to people lightly. I know. I've worked in universities for quite a few years. Let's look at Philip Alpers background and the biography given in the earlier links provided: We're told that "Philip Alpers is the Founding Director of GunPolicy.org - a global project of the Sydney School of Public Health which compares armed violence, firearm injury prevention and gun law across 350 jurisdictions world-wide." "He is Director of the Centre for Armed Violence Reduction which hosts the Secretariat of the Pacific Small Arms Action Group (PSAAG.org)." "He's been accredited to the United Nations Small Arms Programme of Action since 2001. He participates in the UN process as a member of the Australian Government Delegation. He's a former Senior Fellow at the Harvard Inquiry Control Research Center, Harvard School of Public Health, he presents internationally and testifies at government hearings on firearm injury prevention, law and policy. In a previous career in journalism he hosted two dozen TV documentaries, a weekly prime- time consumer affairs show and a dozen TV series and programs for NZ public broadcasters." "Philip Alpers is recognised among the "Top 100" the most influential people in armed violence reduction compiled by the peak international NGO in the field." Not bad for someone who a few rank as supposedly being "Unqualified." Posted by Foxy, Thursday, 19 January 2017 9:50:25 AM

There is plenty of dubious 'research' and comments by 'experts' that can prove whatever you want. Quoting back and forth generates plenty of 'citations' that in reality are worth nothing.
To take a parallel to the flawed 'research' put out by 'gun control org' (where 'org' can mean one man or none and no funding, apparently), there is what John Howard called the Black Armband (indigenous) history of Australia, where myths have been generated and even taught in schools and universities(!). There is a most interesting and relevant OLO article 'Truthiness and factiness', by a real academic that is worth reading. Posted by leoj, Thursday, 19 January 2017 10:06:32 AM

Dearest Foxy,
Frankly, I'll be glad to get through this year without either Trump clumsily, or Putin calculatingly, starting another war somewhere. My bet No. 1 is that, for no particular reason, Estonia will 'start' a brutal and unprovoked war against its Russian slave population, requiring Putin, much against his will, having to defend his people against oppression by morally supporting 'partisans' there. He might have a go at Poland as well, and maybe Lithuania - well, why not ? Three for one. My bet No. 2 is that Trump will totally alienate the Philippines and put Taiwan in a very precarious position. He will bungle the incredibly sensitive issue of Chinese illegal building up of shoals in the South China Sea. For good measure, he may infuriate India for no particular reason, and incite Canada to impose trade sanctions on the US. He may even do something like the right thing and get stuck into ISIS, but I doubt it. I hope I'm wrong on all counts. Love, Joe Posted by Loudmouth, Thursday, 19 January 2017 1:05:59 PM

That’s the grim warning from Australian international firearms expert Philip Alpers, who was working in the US during the 1999 Columbine High School massacre and has spent decades researching gun safety."

This is necessary to get past the Telegraph's subscription wall.
Adjunct Professor Alpers, distinguished from his University peers by an utter lack of any academic achievement or training is doing his bit for his own career as usual.
