Turbull is certainly stupid enough to do it, but let's wait to see if he can restrain himself for once. The UN is stuffed up enough without having Rudd inflicted on it.

I think previous posters underestimate the hatred and corruption in Labour ranks. They expect to get everything for the bruvvers (and Sisterhood) they will not like it if they are not supported. This is why Turnbull did not just laugh the whole thing off.
Please remember the broughaha about "Aussie Cattle" shipped live for slaughter. They cannot be cruel to cattle that were from Australia!
I know it is completely irrational but it is easier to humour these fools that fight them.

While Rudd would not be my first choice as UN secretary he certainly deserves a shot at it.

He was a visionary Prime Minister who saved this nation from the worst of the GFC while many other leaders were asleep at the wheel.

I think he did a good job as Labour's foreign affairs spokesperson and having been one of the many victims of the lies that lead to the invasion of Iraq;

“There is no debate or dispute as to whether Saddam Hussein possesses weapons of mass destruction. He does. There's no dispute as whether he's in violation of UN Security Council resolutions. He is.”

I feel he would be far less likely to take things at face value which really is a quality essential for the job of UN head.

Rudd is an intelligent man who is capable of recognising the issues of the day. He is also capable of then ignoring his insights.

http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/content/2010/s2884108.htm

KERRY O'BRIEN, PRESENTER: Today was a day when the Prime Minister's words came back to haunt him big time. Late last year, when the Opposition was demanding a delay in the Government's emissions trading scheme until after the Copenhagen summit, Kevin Rudd accused them of absolute political cowardice and an absolute failure of leadership. He also described climate change as the greatest moral, economic and environmental challenge of our generation. Now, he has postponed the ETS for three years at least and what was once a central plank in Labor's first term agenda is now at the bottom of the pile.

Rudd made a moving apology for the treatment of previous Australian governments towards the Aborigines.

Then he did nothing beyond that to improve things.

The UN needs a leader - not a person intelligent enough to be aware of problems but not always committed to do something about them. IMHO pushing Rudd for UN Secretary-General is more stupid than giving Prince Philip a knighthood.

Rudd was an incompetent PM that managed to stuff up just about everything he touched, and antagonised just about everyone he worked with. Whilst the UN has a Saudi Prince who advocates for public executions as the head of the UN human rights commission Rudd might just fit in, however, I do believe that the UN secretary general is a position of real power for which Rudd would be an extreme embarrassment to Australia.

However, given that he is Australian the patriotic thing to do would be to nominate him, but let him paddle his own boat as he is the only one that believes in him. Doing this would achieve 3 things.

1 - Keep him out of Aus for a while
2 - Let him waste more of his wife's $millions
3 - Provide a positive comparison for Helen Clark who is more likely to get the job.
