Politicians supporting another politician, while expecting the same for themselves one day.
Rudd would be a disaster. Posted by onthebeach, Wednesday, 27 July 2016 7:39:32 AM

Maybe Rudd wants to boost illegal immigration world wide?

Possibly for the first time I agree with all of you.

I think its part of Turnbull's evil plan (holds little finger to corner of mouth) to destroy the UN.

Rudd would not be a disaster, but it's moot anyway because he has virtually no chance of getting the job even with Turnbull's support.
There's plenty of evidence of Turnbull's stupidity (such as FTTN) but Turnbull's decision on whether to back Rudd won't be evidence of stupidity whatever he chooses. Posted by Aidan, Wednesday, 27 July 2016 12:24:39 PM

Turbull is certainly stupid enough to do it, but let's wait to see if he can restrain himself for once. The UN is stuffed up enough without having Rudd inflicted on it.

I think previous posters underestimate the hatred and corruption in Labour ranks. They expect to get everything for the bruvvers (and Sisterhood) they will not like it if they are not supported. This is why Turnbull did not just laugh the whole thing off.
Please remember the broughaha about "Aussie Cattle" shipped live for slaughter. They cannot be cruel to cattle that were from Australia! I know it is completely irrational but it is easier to humour these fools that fight them. Posted by JBowyer, Thursday, 28 July 2016 10:03:27 AM

While Rudd would not be my first choice as UN secretary he certainly deserves a shot at it.
He was a visionary Prime Minister who saved this nation from the worst of the GFC while many other leaders were asleep at the wheel. I think he did a good job as Labour's foreign affairs spokesperson and having been one of the many victims of the lies that lead to the invasion of Iraq; “There is no debate or dispute as to whether Saddam Hussein possesses weapons of mass destruction. He does. There's no dispute as whether he's in violation of UN Security Council resolutions. He is.” I feel he would be far less likely to take things at face value which really is a quality essential for the job of UN head. Posted by SteeleRedux, Thursday, 28 July 2016 11:05:22 AM

Rudd is an intelligent man who is capable of recognising the issues of the day. He is also capable of then ignoring his insights.
http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/content/2010/s2884108.htm KERRY O'BRIEN, PRESENTER: Today was a day when the Prime Minister's words came back to haunt him big time. Late last year, when the Opposition was demanding a delay in the Government's emissions trading scheme until after the Copenhagen summit, Kevin Rudd accused them of absolute political cowardice and an absolute failure of leadership. He also described climate change as the greatest moral, economic and environmental challenge of our generation. Now, he has postponed the ETS for three years at least and what was once a central plank in Labor's first term agenda is now at the bottom of the pile. Rudd made a moving apology for the treatment of previous Australian governments towards the Aborigines. Then he did nothing beyond that to improve things. The UN needs a leader - not a person intelligent enough to be aware of problems but not always committed to do something about them. IMHO pushing Rudd for UN Secretary-General is more stupid than giving Prince Philip a knighthood. Posted by david f, Thursday, 28 July 2016 11:22:07 AM

And that certainly took the cake. shows the depth of the mad monks intelligence and his supporters.

Rudd was an incompetent PM that managed to stuff up just about everything he touched, and antagonised just about everyone he worked with. Whilst the UN has a Saudi Prince who advocates for public executions as the head of the UN human rights commission Rudd might just fit in, however, I do believe that the UN secretary general is a position of real power for which Rudd would be an extreme embarrassment to Australia.
However, given that he is Australian the patriotic thing to do would be to nominate him, but let him paddle his own boat as he is the only one that believes in him. Doing this would achieve 3 things. 1 - Keep him out of Aus for a while 2 - Let him waste more of his wife's $millions 3 - Provide a positive comparison for Helen Clark who is more likely to get the job. I think the truly stupid ones are the libs themselves for not replacing this twit. Hopefully common sense will prevail and they will listen to the punters out there and replace him as quickly as possible. He is all talk, no action and that's the last thing we need going forward from here on in.
As for Rudd representing anything to do with this country is a complete and utter joke, considering the mess he caused in his short rein. Posted by rehctub, Thursday, 28 July 2016 12:36:52 PM

It is not that Rudd is a totally useless leach on society, but the fact that Turnbull wants to sponsor him. It confirms that he is a blood brother to Rudd, but also shows his total ignorance of the Australian voter.
It appears many Lib MPs can see that supporting Rudd for anything, let alone something so dangerous to all of us, would be the last nail in their coffin. All those conservatives who could not put the Libs below Labor in the preference list this time would have the confirmation that Turnbull is poison. Labor could have the magnitude of victory that it took Abbott to gain for the Libs. If Turnbull & Bishop were to survive in the leadership it would be solid proof that the whole party is past its use by date, & the trickle of deserters would become a total flood. It would be unfortunate, but if they don't cut out this rot, & quickly, in a decade they could be no more remembered than the Democrats today. Posted by Hasbeen, Friday, 29 July 2016 12:59:46 AM

Gee, the rabid right are certainly getting their nickers in a knot over this one. Hassy's got so heated his hair caught fire, and Butch was so incensed he jumped into his sausage machine. I did like the "Turnbull's evil plan" comment. If Rudd was a Conservative he would get the full support of the government, end of story. Maybe we should nominate Pauline Hanson, she would be the ideal Aussie to talk to black Africa, and Asia, that would stoke up the forum jollies.

Kevin Rudd was asked to help seafood devastation impacted people of the Pacific Islands. I asked him. His leading staff said my information was passed on to him. He apparently did nothing in response. The situation in the Pacific is still the same or worse. Undernourished sick poverty stricken people irritated by hunger are not likely to unite with their neighbours. Affordable food supply devastated nations are not likely to unite in peace either.
Kevin Rudd should not head the UN. Posted by JF Aus, Friday, 29 July 2016 10:39:35 AM

Rehctub, after all this controversy the other countries would not
appoint Rudd even if Turnbull did put his name forward. Actually with all that waffle from the UN about giving a global warming tax funds to developing countries it might be an act of sabotage to nominate Rudd for the job, the whole idea might be lost in the RUDDLE. If the ALP don't even welcome Rudd to their convention, why then is he suitable to represent Aus as UN Gen Sec?

Turnbull's decided not to nominate him. Probably for the wrong reasons, though he hasn't elaborated on it in public.
FWIW I think Rudd was an underrated PM, and some day he might make a good UNSG. But as I said before, he had virtually no hope of getting the job this time round anyway. Posted by Aidan, Friday, 29 July 2016 3:23:53 PM

Could it be that Allbull, wisely, has decided not to support Rudd because all ministers but one, Bishop, were dead against Rudd?
When he usurped the job, he 'promised' a return to cabinet government, which he belived Abott didn't adhere to; but since then, he has not kept that promise; it has been all about Malcky. After his disasterous election results, perhaps he has decided he should listen to his ministers and drop the narcissistic one-man-band trick? Posted by ttbn, Friday, 29 July 2016 4:45:50 PM

There goes the supposed adult discourse promised by Malcolm and the LNP. What a stupid, petty, childish decision on Rudd. Flabbergasting.

Rudd has published his letters to Turnbull about the recommendation.

Even the Labour government ministers said Rudd was chaotic in government
management and went off on tangents, throwing tantrums etc etc. Surely the government in writing a letter of recommendation should be responsible in giving honest advice to the United Nations ? Posted by Bazz, Saturday, 30 July 2016 11:24:03 PM

He came very close to losing the election. It was only Shortens greater stupidity in declaring he would soften the treatment of illegal boat people that saved him. Now he is considering committing suicide by supporting the disgusting Rudd for UN Secretary General.
Yes the UN has had & still has totally incompetent leadership, but it has not had a total ratbag. Not only would it make the world a much more dangerous place, but would shame us infront of the whole world to show what we were once silly enough to elect as our Prime Minister.
I doubt the fool would last a month if he actually does recommend Rudd. That Julie Bishop would also support Rudd shows that she is way past it as well. We really are not well served with our politicians these days.
