Dear Johan (OUG),

I've got an issue with "Question Time," in Federal
Parliament. It probably started out as a democratic
safeguard years ago. Today its become a rancorous
farce - one which is not helped by a very biased
Speaker who's totally unqualified for the job.
We get Questions on notice which are defensively
answered by public servants. Questions without
notice receive irrelevant ramblings and
propagandist replies. Then of course the Government
also uses up the time with Dorothy Dixers - where
sycophantic and ambitious backbenchers ask questions for
which Ministers have well prepared answers - boasting about
their own and their Government's brilliance.

Surely, the time could be put to better use by genuine
questions from the public, genuine exchange of ideas,
and much more genuine debate - rather than point scoring
and political tactics.

Whilst I often find your posts a bit obtuse I think you have just identified a problem with OLO.

We used to see a much greater spectrum of topics and we used to see threads running for over 100 posts. Not any more.

As can be seen from the main page listings, OLO seems to have moved progressively (sic) to the ABC’s main topic menu and responses are often reduced to the pure rhetoric of the twitteratzi.

This is mostly ranting or venting and IMHO, we do not need to encourage more of this.

Question time is a rabble - and as you point out has been further dragged through the mud by a biased Speaker and her whining prefect.

Apart from the total uselessness of question time to actually further Parliament's integrity and inform the public, it's become a farce lately with Bishop in the Chair. During the last two question times she's tossed out 14 Labor Members. She did once chuck out an LNP member, but that appeared to be a prearranged set-up to make her appear balanced.

Lol!...the score at present is around 120 Labor Members ejected to 1 LNP Member.

There's a colourful parrot perched on our bird feeder in the trees. He's munching a seed bar we left for them. So the sun is shining, the bird has a chunk of seed bar in his claws and is indulging himself without a care in the world.

He's not too far away so when hanging out the washing, I turned the line slowly so as not to startle him.

Talking of birds ...

Every morning I've been going out and putting platefuls
of stale bread and other leftovers on our front lawn
for the birds (everything else is paved). And then I watch
through my front bed-rooms windows while they eat.
There's quite a variety of birds - some of which I don't
recognise - but you're right. It is so worthwhile - and
does have a great effect on me. Much better than

Yep...I love the birds who visit our garden.

We also have some wattle birds who conduct their domestics in our Grevillia...always hilarious.

Have some chooks too...although we're down to two old birds at the moment. We still get some eggs, occasionally...and we actually had a fox sometime back which took one. So now every evening when the sun goes down, we have to go up and attached a little door - and in the morning take it off.

Our son had a great time deducing that it was actually a fox. He sprinkled powder down in front of the chicken coup opening the night after the attack - and sure enough the next morning there were big "Foxy" footprints on it, having come back for seconds.

Mystery solved!

Why Do Birds Sing?

God’s creation is bursting with music! The Bible talks of elements of His creation singing: mountains and hills (Isaiah 55:12), the wilderness when it blossoms soon (Isaiah 35:1-2), and valleys and fields (Psalm 65:10). Scripture shows that floods will clap their hands (Isaiah 55:12), and they sing too (Isaiah 44:23). The heavens are also making music (see also Psalm 19:1-4; Psalm 148:4).

Of course, these parts of creation don’t have consciousness or independent thought any more than they have vocal cords. They are making noise, however. They emit vibrations that are inaudible to our ears. But God can hear them. And when His creation is in perfect order, they culminate in a grand symphony in honor of the Creator.

Part of creation making a lot of noise are the birds of the air. They too praise God with their sounds (Psalm 148:4, 10)—sounds that we get to hear as well. God created them to “sing among the branches” (Psalm 104:12), and considers their sounds to be music. But what is the purpose of these melodies?

We've got Araucanas and Bantams, lovely birds, very calming to be around.

I have magpies who land at my feet, demanding to be fed when I feed the dog & cats, morning & night. The butcher birds land on the roof gutter, & fly out to take their food on the wing, when I throw it up for them.

The Lorikeet demand bread, & chase everything else off until they have done, then the doves & a range of honeyeaters & seed eaters come in.

Later the willy wagtails, silver eyes & the wrens come to the bird bath for a drink & bath.

I still put up with the asparagus fern in the fernery, as it is the chosen safe nesting site for the blue wrens. I do have to chase the crows off, or they would get them even in that prickly stuff.

The 17 year old cat was quite a hunter in her day, proudly delivering snakes, rats, birds & even hares at the front door, but no more. I have a photo of a young magpie perched on her bowl, sharing her dry food. This was after the parent birds had tried to chase it away, & would not let it eat with them. It would not have got away with that just a few years back.

The kookaburras nest in the windbreak along the back of the house paddock, & laugh at us from the clothesline, but so far [23 years] have stayed aloof from any attempt to make friends.

Kookaburra Symbolism

The Baiame myth tells how Baiame came down from the sky to the land, and created rivers, mountains, and forests. He then gave the people their laws of life, traditions, songs, and culture. He also created the first initiation site. This is known as a bora; a place where boys were initiated into manhood. When he had finished, he returned to the sky, and people called him the Sky Hero or All Father or Sky Father.[2]

He is said to be married to Birrahgnooloo (Birran-gnulu), who is often identified as an emu, and with whom he has a son Daramulum (Dharramalan). In other stories Daramulum is said to be brother to Baiame.

It was forbidden to mention or talk about the name of Baiame publicly. Women were not allowed to see drawings of Baiame nor approach Baiame sites—which are often male initiation sites (boras).

In rock paintings Baiame is often depicted as a human figure with a large head-dress or hairstyle, with lines of footsteps nearby. He is always painted in front view; Daramulum is drawn in profile. Baiame is often shown with internal decorations such as waistbands, vertical lines running down the body, bands and dots.

The dots are said to have given him power over smallpox.
