Strange isn't it how some here mount a moral pedestal to declare their self-righteous support for foul, lying terrorists who apparently ought not be interrogated alone because it invades their rights, but the same moral beacons see nothing wrong in very heavy taxes on the drug of dependence of their own addicted countrymen? Isn't that a form of torture? Withholding tobacco from prisoners would be of course.

What I would very much like to see is an allowance for doctors to issue annual certifications for patients who are so dependent on tobacco that they cannot quit. The certificate would be to permit the patient to buy their tobacco products from (say) pharmacy outlets with a minimal tax. Why torture the poor who are addicted to a legal drug and might well be compromising their nutrition to afford the government drug dealers tax?

Apparently the Labor/Greens federal government supplied tobacco products to economic immigrants. That is different, apparently.

Again, just to confirm that I don't smoke and I would not encourage smoking. However I do draw the ethical line at increasing the suffering of the addicts of this legal drug, especially where the government itself is involved and has the biggest take.

I have heard from smokers whose frankness and truth I regard as impeccable, that they went through periods of life where the cigarette was their only friend and only solace. Without prompting they seem to come up with the very similar truth for them.

Reducing smoking is one thing, but if we care and are humanitarian we should also have sensitivity for the vulnerable souls we might trample over with rigid autocratic 'solutions'. First do no harm, even where we believe we might be saving them from a possible later physical disorder.

Has anyone ever researched to find if the Jack-boot economic and shaming approaches to banning tobacco have resulted in an increase in harm, even suicide, in vulnerable groups, for instance people suffering from depression?

In summary, I believe that the low fruit were picked early, there is plenty of information available to deter people from smoking and nothing can be done about the Net for example.

The plain pack 'initiative' was an expensive and wasteful political stunt of the Gillard/Greens government. The results are not there to justify the waste of taxpayers $$ that could have been applied to better use elsewhere, for example to get rid of some single lane bridges on Highway 1.
