I remember what I was doing when John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated - it was the marker of a generation that you could. I'll remember what I was doing when Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela died as well, and maybe that will also become the marker of a generation.

Mandela is a secular saint, and perhaps one could also delete "secular". He represents for me the way forward in human relations. Unlike many who have been oppressed, he showed that forgiveness, not punishment or retribution, is the way forward.

But was he always so? As the leader of a terrorist organisation in a way he was caught up in the cycle of vengeance. What part did 27 years in jail (biologically probably the best of his life) play in the man that Mandela ultimately became?

Mandela speaks to us as a country which has some of the same race and colonisation issues that South Africa has, and also as individuals.

I'm interested in what others here him saying to them, or us.

My point is that Mandela is no more deserving of the accolade "hero" than Kobe Bryant, Tupac Shakur, Lucky Dube or Michael Jordan, in fact Black athletes and artists probably do more to bring hope of a better life to young Africans than Mandela ever did.
