Arjay, there are two separate events commonly referred to as "The Gulf of Tonkin incident". The first was 2 August 1964, with the USS Maddox and North Vietnamese Navy torpedo boats. This is generally accepted to have occurred. The second was 4 August 1964 and is now thought to have been due to a false radar image, not involving NVN ships. Your suggestion of the risk of a nuclear war triggered by an attack on a US ship blamed on Syria seems unlikely. The USA has in the past responded to such attacks with conventional force. 1. Announce that nuclear war is imminent.

2. State that it will be initiated by the united States, through use of a "false flag" operation.
