Partisans on either side may have their own spin, but there is a lot of pressure from within Labor to go to an election ASAP.
Kevin Rudd enjoys the pomp and power of being PM so much that he is playing fast and loose with Labor's chances. The boat numbers will ramp up to test him. The strident activism of the advocates at home in Australia is advising the criminal people smugglers and the illegal immigrants themselves that the Australian government hasn't got the bottle to hold out. It is all bluff that will be soon compromised. Media sensationalism will see to that. The victim industry is good at working the media and especially the publicly funded national broadcasters. The ABC and SBS are working the sympathy angle for the boat arrivals. They will cost Kevin Rudd plenty with re-runs of available programs and fodder. I reckon that Rudd will hold on too long while he and his family are doing very well thank you out of the VIP flights and other benefits. He has only recently installed his young son as a senior adviser for example and the money must be good. Then there are all of those senior public servants and diplomats genuflecting and telling him what he wants to hear. What a rush, eh Kev? Albanese and others must have no fingernails left. Worth note John Howard twice went past 3 years before calling an election.
How ever our learned mate Rechtub is rather like the third bull in the killing line complaining about the two in front being too slow. Posted by Belly, Monday, 29 July 2013 5:32:46 PM

I would have thought the link cry,s out for Rudd not to call an election yet. 17% of his own party? Or is it the nation? Posted by Belly, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 5:48:23 AM

As I say Belly, not a bad player to have on the bench.
I think we all forget one option, that being that Abbott can always resign, can't he! Posted by rehctub, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 6:10:31 AM
