Frozen OLO webpages

  1. Pages:
  2. 1
  3. 2
  4. 3
  5. ...
  6. 12
  7. 13
  8. 14
  9. All
I use Internet Explorer 8 as my browser and I've been having an issue
with loading OLO pages for some time now. Sometime they load fine
and other times they freeze up, usually after the overhead advertisement has loaded
and before the right hand advertisement
loads up. Then the whole page freezes up.

Am I the only one with this problem? It only happens to me on OLO
and nowhere else. Any advice to fix the the problem would be
appreciated.

I have 2 suggestions Yabbs.

Upgrade to a decent browser. I believe Google Chrome sets the standard, but even IE9 is not too bad.

Upgrade Adobe Flash player to the latest version.

It is free and works well.

I use Firefox on an Apple computer and have no trouble. Firefox also has many add-ons, one of which is "ad blocker" which I also find increases loading speeds

I have the same problem Yabby, so don't feel all alone. I advised OLO a couple of weeks ago, that I was not getting past the banner headline.

I have found if I bring each page up as a pop up it minimises, but does not eliminate the problem.

I also have a problem with the cursor disappearing, or freezing. Both these problems occur only with OLO, & not on any of the other sites I frequent.

As they are offering web site design, I believe it is up to site administration, & to their advantage, to fix these problems, rather than expect me to change my systems.

I did up grade to the latest Internet Explorer last week, with perhaps some slight improvement.

I noticed that an OLO page only scores 12 out of 100 on the W3C mobileOK Checker. Fixing some of the problems detected may allow the web site to display on a larger range of devices. I suggest aiming for a 85% score: http://validator.w3.org/mobile/check?docAddr=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.onlineopinion.com.au%2Fthread.asp%3Fdiscussion%3D5437&async=false

I like this guys attitude HasBeen. A line has to be drawn somewhere, you cant have people complaining that it doesn't work on netscape 1.

Let's not forget too it's free to upgrade browsers and flash.

Okey dokey, I had another, this time closer look. I do actually
have IE 9 :) I also checked the Adobe Flash player and its
the latest, so their website tells me.

I'm less keen on changing browers as I have a whole host of websites
saved on this one, and I would not want to lose all them.

It seems to me that maybe it's not OLO, but the mob who run their
advertising banners, who have the problem. Sometimes the right
hand banner ad just fails to click in and so the freeze. Perhaps
Graham could inform them, that there is an issue with some browers.

Oh Yabbs you can import all your porn bookmarks in to the new browser without too much fuss. Normally they prompt you to do so when you install them.

They also compete for you to tell them they're your favorite. They yell, 'Set me as the default browser! Pick me!'

You could also use your other browser all the time, and just use a proper browser for Online Opinion

Strange attitude Houelly. If OLO want to attract users, which attract the advertising that pays their way, it is up to them to attract them.

Computers & web sites are a very minor part of my life. If it is a hassle, it's gone.

I was putting it down to the thought police monitoring and reacting to my opposition to the NBN.

But it appears to be due to other causes. Perhaps members of some social media site ( Stop Free Speech (?) ) are crowding the OLO site to stop publication of anti-Left comments.

Ooh Houllie, I have my porn bookmarks on the desktop, which is more
convenient :) But I have a whole lot of favourites saved and
filed into categories, so that I can pull up say any old URL about the
evils of the Catholic Church etc, in a jiffy. They are all handy
for OLO discussions.

It seems others are having a problem too and IE would still be a
popular browser, so the best option would be for the people who do
the banner advertising, which I understand is not Graham but some
outside company, to examine the problem and fix it if possible.

Hi Yabby,

I don't know about Internet-Explorer: I use firefox and it has some nice add-ons that allow you never to see an ad. They even automatically update the list of advertising sites for you.

Just in case, I also added my own tiny bit of software that blocks all advertising sites by directing them to my own internal "server" which always returns an empty page (you could of course block them in your router or firewall, but then the browser will wait until time-out, whereas if it receives an empty page, more accurately a page with just one line-feed character, it continues immediately).

Good thread Yabby. This frozen page business, where just the header comes up, has become absolutely chronic and totally maddening!

I was under the impression that it was not something to do specifically with OLO, as it seems to happen sometimes with other pages as well.

It is good to know that it is a common problem and that there are easy solutions.

'Computers & web sites are a very minor part of my life. If it is a hassle, it's gone.'

But I would say OLO is a large enough part of your life hasbeen, given the posting frequency. It's an economic issue. Perhaps OLO has such a vast population of Luddites that it is worth the money to them, but for most I doubt it. I'd say Graham is grateful enough for the advertising revenue, but I'm not sure it would be a big enough market for those advertisers to modify their adverts for legacy browsers. As I said you have to draw the line somewhere, you just cant buy Betamax videos anymore.

When it takes all of 2 minutes for the user to update their browser I don't see it as much of an imposition.

You can import them and keep them in their folders Yabbs, it's a 1 click affair.

Yabby;
One problem I run into some time back was when Microsoft brought out
a new version of windows, some servers were modified to cater for
changes in the new windows. Some browsers then had trouble.
Could this be happening now for MS ver 8 ?

I gave up on chasing windows versions when I was given XP and then
vowed to never buy another operating system.
I have used Debian Linux since then.

Good luck

Hi, I've been reading the comments and I have a problem. I can't replicate the issues being complained of, even though the complaints are spread widely enough that there must be a problem. I use Chrome normally, but have copies of IE, Safari and Firefox on my computer to perform a basic check on sites.

Thanks for the WC3 checker link Tom. The forum scores badly, probably because it is very old and we haven't had the resources to do anything with it.

I'm thinking of doing some fundraising to find the funds to move all of the site across to WordPress.

Interested in feedback on that.

GrahamY, when I experience the intermittent, but occasionally frequent, 'freeze-up' the only consistency is that Firefox 16.0.1 tells me that it is 'waiting for adserver.adtechus.com'

<<Firefox 16.0.1 tells me that it is 'waiting for adserver.adtechus.com'>>

I have that site on my black-list: my internal DNS directs every request to it to a dummy server on my own computer, returning a 1-character page (one line-feed character because some browsers complain if the page is completely empty).

I will never allow to bring this commercialism into my home. If I couldn't prevent it, I wouldn't be here.
Those who allow it should understand that besides the psychological damage, it also takes longer to bring a page, takes space out of the readable area, and you end up paying your ISP for the extra download volume.

Like "579" I am happy to pay for this service, knowing that others too will not have to suffer ads and Graham too will be able to devote more of his time toward the quality of this site rather than courting advertisers.
I don't know whether $100, annual fee I presume, is the right price (seems like Leftists have extra bucks), but I trust Graham will come up with the correct pricing.

The problems reported by the W3C checker are mostly easily fixed. While WordPress is good, chaning to it would be a bit like buying a new car because you can't afford to change the spark plugs on your old one.

It is good to see such a diversity of OLO users commenting upon a technical support topic. It has long been my view that insufficient attention is paid by the ordinary citizen to the 'mechanical' aspects of their experience, be it their online communication and interaction experience, or their participation, both individual and collective, in the political process.

FWIW, this morning this tweet from Twitter '@Support' came up in my timeline: https://twitter.com/Support/status/260450898084511744

It would seem to confirm that Twitter thinks, or is at least comfortable with suggesting, that there may be online interaction problems related to Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8. Note its recommendation.

Be that as it may, although I may not have been posting on OLO as frequently of late as I have in the past, I too have experienced to a small degree this page loading freeze phenomenon while viewing OLO, which I have continued to do. I experienced it while using Mozilla Firefox as my browser, but that version of it that came with my Linux operating system, Ubuntu Linux 8.04, but without having downloaded and installed the various updates that have been made available since the O/S was first installed.

It is very interesting to see GrahamY say, in his post of Tuesday, 23 October 2012 at 7:01:22 AM AEST, that he cannot replicate this freezing behaviour of the site. It would be most interesting to hear from a range of persons who regularly view most of the discussions on OLO, but have never posted on the site, as to whether they have experienced these freezes.

Arjay, in his successive posts of Monday, 22 October 2012 at 5:51:00 PM AEST, and Monday, 22 October 2012 at 8:28:56 PM AEST, may have given some clues as to the nature of this phenomenon. It could be a USER-targetted phenomenon.

Belly indicated on 21 August that he was having browser freezes under IE: http://forum.onlineopinion.com.au/thread.asp?discussion=5317#145268

Belly's post here on Monday, 22 October 2012 at 10:24:31 AM AEST tells what fixed it for him, and thereby hangs a tale.

Thanks for the comments Tom, but I disagree about WordPress. I'd like to expand what is available on the forum. For example users should be able to email each other with permission, if they want to, but to do that using our current system would be very expensive, as we would have to program from the ground up.

I'd also like to be able to set some of our contributors up with access so that they can post articles themselves rather than waiting for me to put them in. WordPress will handle that better than our current system.

And we also need to move to a subscription model, which our current system again won't support without us investing major amounts of money.

Interesting.

My own experience of this started at some indeterminate date in the last few weeks. The symptoms on my system are an imperfect/incomplete page load, which I "fix" with a quick click onto a neighbouring tab, then back again. Takes less than two seconds.

It seems to happen on a number of web sites, but not all.

I fully expect it to be a random browser compatibility issue (I use Chrome) triggered by some combination of HTML on the page, and that it will disappear as quickly as it came, without anybody finding out what caused it.

Continued from post of Tuesday, 23 October 2012 at 8:36:26 AM.

I have already suggested these browser freezes may be a user-targeted phenomenon. Viewers who also have a Twitter account, as GrahamY does, will be capable of exploring my tweet timeline on Twitter, where I tweet as '@ForrestGumpp'. If any do, they will find tweets around the end of September and early October mentioning degraded Twitter functionality. For those without Twitter accounts, I post these links to specific tweets that you can view that encapsulate some of the problems I was experiencing.

https://twitter.com/ForrestGumpp/status/251868613739433984

http://twitpic.com/az9dac/full

The degradation of service that I experienced was progressive and cumulative. What may have operated one day would cease to operate the next. Had this degradation come about because my old and un-updated version of my Firefox browser had become incompatible with Twitter features, it would have been expected that all of the degradation should have occurred at once, as at some given date my browser passed into incompatibility with Twitter.

My Google search start page had displayed a warning for some time that my version of Firefox was not up to date and was vulnerable to online attacks. The progressive erosion of Twitter functionality seemed consistent with that having happened. After noting the Twitter degradation progress, and other freezes seemingly induced through other browser tabs from time to time, I finally updated my Ubuntu Linux operating system and browser with all the security patches on 3 October 2012. See: https://twitter.com/ForrestGumpp/status/253306078543101954

I think it worth noting that over the period during which all these problems manifested themselves I had been tweeting in relation to the Assange extradition, and posting on both OLO and the 'No Place for Sheep' blog on the same subject. As had others.

I believe OLO is seen as a significant vehicle for discussion outside of the 'embedded' media on topics like Assange. It is not beyond belief that certain interests would seek to disrupt the conversations that might develop. See: http://forum.onlineopinion.com.au/thread.asp?discussion=5317#144804 and continue scrolling and thinking.

I still think that my problem here is due to the software used by
the advertisers and their advertisements, as the pattern on my
computer is always much the same.

The top advert always downloads. The advert on the right usually
does, but when it stalls, that is when my brower tells me that the
OLO server is not responding, so the rest of the page stops downloading
and freezes. Its always at that same exact point. Never
does it download half the right hand advert, its before it even
starts. So I am not sure how Graham's advertising software
works in with his OLO software, but somewhere there has to be a
clash there, with some of the software that some of us run.

It seems quite erratic. Sometimes it fine, then its hopeless for a
while again

Hi. I still haven't experienced any freezing, so it is a bit frustrating trying to understand what the issue is.

I suspect though that it is to do with the advertising after reading Yabby's post. The advertising is fed in by the advertising agency via a code inserted into our page template. The system loads the page elements sequentially. Perhaps the issue is with flash used in the ads and has nothing to do with the browser.

I've got Poirot's email about EasyStart, but haven't seen that ad yet.

Very interesting...

While the easystart ad is on a page, the last/latest post is not visible. It's only able to be read once someone else has made another post.

I just had a peek at stevenlmeyer's new thread, and there is no post there at all because the easystart ad is on that page. If another ad is on a page, there are no problems.

I suppose this post will appear sometime later - either after a subsequent post or if the ad is not on this page.

Poirot,

Like Graham, I haven't seen the easystart ads either. My problem seems to be the QUT homeloans ad. Which is pretty much the only ad I see - except mostly it is on the side (taking up most of the space), not on the posting page. 99% of the time that ad appears, I have problems. In fact, your latest post didn't appear at all until just now. Just THAT ad on Page 8.

Weird. And still annoying.

Excuse my morbid fascination, but I just read my last post here - and then I came back and it was missing because of the appearance of the easystart ad...then I returned once more and now there is a Dulux ad so my post is again visible. (someone has since posted and now my post is visible, while there's is not)

I read Graham's response where he says he can't see an easystart ad - yet when I went back the easystart ad is there and Graham's post (the last on that page) is gone.

Okay, it's getting even weirder. I just went to stevenlmeyer's new thread - and the same problem - no post just an ad with another ad attached to it in elongated form. It's not easystart but one for CUA personal loans followed by Subaru.

Back again to Steven's thread, and now his post is visible with a different ad (Cover-more travel insurance)

...anyhooo, I'm beginning to wonder if I had too much sugar in my tea this morning : )

Well this time the page has downloaded ok, with only the advert on
the top and not on the side or middle. So the problem must be
related to them. I thought I'd give you feedback, thanks for
trying to fix it.

Yes, Graham, it seems much better...although when I first came back on, nearly every page on this thread had a black box where the ad should be playing, but when I came back through the pages before posting this all the ads were playing like they should.

Seems okay now - although intermittently on some pages there is a black box with no ad playing.

I've told the advertising agency that the issue doesn't seem to be fixed. Is that a fair summation of the last three (at least) posts?

Hi Graham,

Well I've been reading various articles this morning, so far no
problems, so I thought that they might have fixed it now, which
would be great.

Graham,

The site seems fine now.

I wasn't able to access OLO for several hours this morning - connection kept timing out, although every other site I attempted loaded promptly.

(I did notice yesterday a couple of times when I was trying out pages that I got a mainly black screen with OLO pages pushed to right hand side of screen in a strip, although this was only a few times, but did seem odd)

As I say, the site seems fine since I managed to get back on earlier.

We were offline between somewhere around 4:00 and 10:00 EST. It was a server problem which will require some maintenance in the near future. So that was quite different from the problems of the last few weeks, which seem to be ad related. Thanks for all your feedback and support.

still working so lets find reason?
or what next?
http://guides.yoosecurity.com/how-remove-fbi-moneypak-virus-malware-that-blocked-pc-asks-for-payment-100-dollars/

quote from link

""...Computer locked up on the screen
is something from fbi.gov ..basicly the user gets a message..saying you have the FBI $100 virus (FBI Moneypak Virus/ Malware),

And this message popped up and said FBI: and it pretty much locked my computer unless i pay 100 dollars within the next 72 hours, it wont let me do anything.''

so clever these people stopping acces to info
but lets continue the next symptom..maybe comming to a computer near you..anytime they chose

well ..''..it says FBI at the top and then copyright of the criminal code of the USA, it says the FBI federal bureau of investigation and then attention. You couldn’t get the PC to respond to anything while it was running''..

i often get freezes..and refuse updates
so make sure you back up into the next format..cause these times will be rememberd as the times so much was lost..not just innocence or freewill...

and those with the real secrets..
want to keep their crimanal treasonous acts secret..or hidden from vieuwing or finding..[noticed the google search inhouse..on so many forums..dont work all that well;..or even as good as it used to be

like lighters..childproofing..great rsi claims comming up..
so many simply go invisable mode..i feel obsolete product is a claim of right to redresss..over and abouve any first class securitised holders..[morally...

or how about the web access
through our earth cable..sounds cute

but as its working..4 now
lets just go mute

Thanks GY I found it off line yesterday and today briefly.
Now far from an expert but have had the add trouble.
Pages froze but a fair time ago.
I had stubbornly been sticking to explorer 8, always knew it was not the best.
Put firefox in, with my usuals yabby, you could do it standing on your head.
Using the paid AVG pack.
And some firefox add ons no trouble.
Now lets hit the bin, give cash, I have before we get what wepay for.
Find me a site the equal of this before you say no.

Belly, the thing is even some people with firefox have had some
problems, as the thread shows. But for the site to work, all
browsers need to work or Graham will lose viewers and I'd say his
advertising returns come from the number of clicks. For what its
worth, I too donate to OLO, as I agree with you and I know the
budget it tight. I only wish Graham would get the Paypal part
working, as it makes donating much easier.

Yabby or any one still visiting the thread.
yabby mentioned the donation link and that he wanted it better.
It is very much better and so easy to use.
For some reason the night I tried I mucked up.
Fixed that yesterday it is easy.
Given this site is privately owned and maintained, it needs our help.
Do not let the donation link frighten you.

Damn weird this is!

I'm having no problems at all this evening, but my housemate sitting in the next room, is cursing and swearing his silly looking head off!

OLO just won’t work for him! Frozen pages all over the place. Can’t exit the page. Gets an ‘end now’ box, but it doesn’t work.

He's saying that he's going to quit OLO. Can't this sort of thing any more.

He’s on Window XP and I’m on Windows 7. He’s on Explorer 8 and I’m on 9.

Fascinating!! !!

Luddy, tell him to try holding the shift key down as he clicks on the page he wants. This brings the page up as a pop up. If it does not fully open, you can at least close it & try again. It is the only way I have been able to access OLO for a while.

Used normally kept freezing the computer for long periods.

Ludwig/Yabby I had the same problem this morning.
Then realized I had been having it more than I said.
Been fixing it fast and it seems automatically.
Every time it takes place the add thing is in the bottom left hand corner.
So I ,unthinking I found this morning, hit the back key.
Then go forward and it is unfrozen.
All in a micro second.

Ludwig,

I, too, was experiencing the sort of freezes you describe prior to patching my OS and browser with all the security updates, as described in my post of Wednesday, 24 October 2012 at 7:47:43 AM.

I do not know whether, when you re-start your browser after a re-boot, you are choosing the option of restoring your previous session tabs, or whether you are starting an entirely new session. If it is the former, you might achieve temporary relief from the freezes by starting a new session and then progressively bringing up the other sites you may want from your bookmarks.

For example, at one time it seemed to me that it was the logging back into Twitter via the Twitter tab in my relatively standard session selection of tabs (email, OLO posting history, etc) I routinely maintain that hastened the onset of freezes.

This suggestion of course assumes that there is no fundamental browser incompatibility problem between your IE9 and the sites you are visiting.

In your post of Thursday, 8 November 2012 at 9:54:43 PM, you refer to your housemate having problems whilst you are not, even though both of you are attempting to access the same site, OLO. Are you sharing the same internet connection to the premises? If so, could it be that his system has unpatched (or unpatchable) security vulnerabilities that are permitting user-targetted online attacks to which you are, at least for the time being due to your different OS and browser version, immune?

Was there to be any internet-savvy entity wishing to disrupt, in generality, the conversation upon OLO, there would not be too extensive a base of regular comment contributors to target with one form or other of online attack to enable such disruption to happen. Until I updated my system, some of the degraded functionality I was experiencing had the appearance of online attacks, but not necessarily delivered through the OLO site.

Presently, I am having no OLO accessing problems.

Interestingly, about the time that OLO stopped mucking around, at least for me, Yahoo7 started freezing, although only one page at a time, not the whole internet explorer.

Oh & a UK motoring sight has started turning my cursor invisible. It's still there & working, just a bit hard to find, or keep in the right place.

Me thinks a few bright & bushy tailed programmers, are not quite as bright as they would like to think they are.

You have no idea how much good this does my heart, as a bloke who can have difficulty programing the microwave, some nights.

Yeah I’ve seen this sort of thing happen elsewhere too Haz. It’s not just OLO.

.

Oh yes, I forgot to respond to Forrest.

<< Are you sharing the same internet connection to the premises? >>

No, they are entirely different.

Neither of us have had any problems for quite a while now. Well, I presume my housemate hasn’t. He’s been sitting at home while I’ve been off gallivanting around the countryside and camping out, so I’m not entirely sure about that.

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts on the matter.

Haz, from my housemate:

Please thank my old mate Hazza for giving me that advice on the 8th of November, to be honest it sounded a bit crackpot, so I didn’t even try it for a few days but when I did, it worked, so I am truly grateful to the old basket.

You can also tell him that holding the Control key does the same thing – albeit in a slightly different way.

Also tell him that we have a fair bit in common and I like reading his posts (Well, most of them). Damn it just cut and paste this note and post it to him!
