I too have worked in the mine areas in WA and the NT. No one outside of the skilled areas, inlcuding driving dump trucks, had to have any experience at all, they were just put on and allotted to a job, could be a TA, a cleaner, a service truck hand, labourer, road train driver, scraper driver etc etc. Whatever minimal training needed was given on the job.
The problem with saying there are no people with the required skills is that miners clearly do not train anyone anymore.
Remember the Keating Training Guarantee Level? A miserable 1.5%? And what did employers do?
Spent it on long lunches for execs!
There is clearly no interest in Australia in training people even for basic jobs. Why do I say this? Because I have never seen a job ad' that says, 'drillers hands wanted - no experience required', or 'road train driver wanted - must have semi licence and road train training given', or 'brush hand required all training given' and so on.
Much easier to get a foreign worker with no knowledge of safety requirements or pay and conditions and then rip them off.
