My father arrived in this country in 1960, couldn't speak a word of english. Got a job straight away working as a diesel mechanic for a bus company in Melbourne . 2 years later I came along, and a few years after that we moved to W.A so he could work on the big gas pipelines they were building over there. I pretty much spent the first 12 years of my life living in a caravan travelling with the crew as they moved along the desert floor laying the pipe. 80% of them including some of the management couldn't speak a word of english. Somehow however; without the ability to speak the language, they managed to put a massive. huge pipe in the ground which delivers gas to Perth and Fremantle. Miracle I know but they did it.

Best years of my life. Things were different back then and as a kid living in the bush and going to school with the locals (mostly Aboriginal kids) I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

The reason most of the crew were migrants was because the Aussies didn't want to move from their homes. The migrants had no ties to their homes as they had already made the decision to move from their homelands. I would imagine the same applies.
