Why do sporting stars fly under the tall poppy radar

I see the latest stats about our sporting stars earnings, the top five ranging from $13M down to a lousy $5 M, this year.

Why is that these people fly under the radar, while the tall poppies flog the likes of CEO,s and the pollies?

Surely they work harder and have more stress to deal with than sports stars.

In no way do they fly under the radar.
In fact the tall poppy part of you thread bought me here.
Uninformed media folk are constantly calling for such as Ponting and others to go.
No understanding of the game but tall Poppy's, our best, can not have a beer with out idiots and media watching.
Now wages, some are a business in one man Warnie is worth twice his pay.
No game no gate money no fans with out stars.
Like workers, sorry to bring them up, head hunters want the best market forces drive wages in any enterprise.
As we both follow the only game I have a question Bulldogs buying Manly coach.
As the only team with dog in its name does that make them the Beagles?
Have a good Christmas.

I am constantly bringing up this same question Rehctub.

There must be some psychological reason that the general public feel that they have some affinity with celebrities because they try to emulate them and consequently hang on their every word. Why else would advertisers use them to promote things that they would often know nothing about..........It's because they are paid to to do so and are believed by the gullible public

Envy directed at the salaries of company CEOs is therefore never equated to the sort of money that sports stars or celebrities may demand, because they are not faceless as their counterparts in industry are and they don't "entertain" Look at the enormous sums of money the fans are prepared to pay to see their favourite star whether he sings or plays with a ball. It is inconsequential to them that he/she makes so much. In fact is is all part of their attraction probably

Butch,
I agree with Belly on this. Sports stars and other celebrities may not be critisised for the money they receive by put a foot wrong socially and they cop it.

For some reason footballers, of all codes, seem to let themselves down socially.

Don't you read all the nasty comments in the courier mail when there is an article about that little girl I admire for sailing round the world. The Brisbane locals are particularly nasty about Jessica, and you would think they would be supportive of one of their own. If Jessica ever trips up they will attack her like dogs around a dead sheep. So far she has done us proud in all activities, but make one mistake and she will cop it.

Another local the Brisbane readers try to cut down is Sam Stosur and I think she is to be admired. Take a look at the readers comments next time you see an article about the above two achievers, in the courier mail.

Yes both posts informed.
Rechtub I maybe you too paid to play my first few years insurance fees each game just in case.
I stay in contact with some in todays game and can tell you this.
Often they only know after their manager tells them how much they will get.
Now we clash, then talk again.
I need to say this, I am not sure you know better.
But your out right denigration off every thing and one involved in the ALP?
Well wrong, silly, and well leave it there.
But this may help you grow.
If I said that, about any party,I would be very silly and uninformed ok.

Belly I think you had best take another pill, cause nothing in my thread bags the
Pollies.

But please do remember, we generally choose our pollies from the bunch that the corporate world has passed up.

Now a classic example of tall poppy, is the recent possible pay rise for Allan Joyce, yet, on the other hand we have this guy who rides a push bike yet earned $5 million last year.

No staff, no unions and very few objections.

Do you really think he is worth more than a CEO responsible for thousands of staff and billions in assetts?
