Chinese regulators suspend TV crime and spy dramas

All have been ordered off-air with immediate effect.

An official at China's state TV regulator confirmed to the BBC that the verbal order had been made.

China's Communist Party is preparing to mark 90 years since its founding and the authorities want TV stations to air programmes praising the party instead.

The government wants China's one billion television viewers to tune in to a wholesome diet of patriotic propaganda that will glorify the party ahead of the anniversary on 1 July.>>

This is just one aspect of a very very different mindset. I remember mentioning to a friend of mine in China, how Fox news was known to exaggerate the truth due to a general dislike of liberals and Obama in particular.

My friend replied: "why doesn't Obama just close Fox News?".

I replied something to the effect that politicians tended to be afraid of the media in western countries. My friend regarded this with skepticism and said that governments are the most powerful group in the country.

Most Chinese who haven't been overseas don't really believe that media in Western countries are independent. They might in theory, but they don't really get how that operates in everyday life. They assume that the government still holds all the reins. Same goes for the judiciary.

Having lived in China for a while I see how lucky we are.
Sure, the quality of our political analysis tends to be lacking, but newspapers have no fear of sticking the boot into either major party if it will sell papers, which is why I tend to regard those who dismiss 'mainstream media' as some kind of diabolical conspiracy, as fools.

Say what you will, they do help keep our government from running roughshod over us, and most of the online alternative media sites have a long way to go before they have enough credibility to be taken as seriously.

Having lived in China for a while I see how lucky we are.
