Here is one.

Firstly, the internet is not perfect. There are strange connectivity outages all the time, sometimes persisting for days. Sometimes they are caused by arguments between the ISP's. http://blog.isp-planet.com/blog/2008/03/another-cogent-peering-fight.html Usually however they are just technical. Some router somewhere have gone gaga and miss routes some packets flowing through it, so one portion of the internet can't see another. When it only effects to distant sites on the internet, it is not unusual for no one to notice for a while.

Secondly, assuming you are running Windows, run a virus scanner over your machine - several different ones in fact. (Merely having one installed doesn't cut it I am afraid - you will still get viruses, and the first thing they do is disable you virus scanner.) There are plenty of free ones - just google for "online virus scanner".

Thirdly, if you a have a virus scanner checking your web browsing turn it off - at least for a little while to see if it is causing your problems.

Given all the server problems OLO has been experiencing lately, I'm just wondering whether a little glitch I'm seeing is part of all those problems, or just peculiar to my own computer set-up.

When an OLO page loads, an area in the bottom right hand corner of the page remains blank, obscuring text in the process.

Here is an example:

http://www.twitpic.com/rv6on

Having only recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 (the current long-term-support version of the OS) in place of my lightning-struck Ubuntu 7.10, I was prepared to believe it might be a quirk of the newer OS, but after having downloaded and installed all the updates the problem still, seemingly randomly, occurs. I suspect it may be related to a particular ad loading up on the OLO page.

Is anyone else experiencing this minor annoyance?

PS I have been experiencing problems with running YouTube videos since re-installing my Ubuntu 8.04 OS. I had put it down to an OS-related problem, but perhaps that is not so. I haven't checked since installing all the (419) updates to the system yesterday.

A sweeping..international treaty..to regulate how knowledge and creativity..may flow on the Internet is now being negotiated.

The film,.,music,..publishing..and information industries..don’t want a public debate about the issues..or an open debate in Congress...So they have been working..hand-in-glove with the U.S./Trade Representative..to move U.S. policymaking offshore..and throw a dark cloak of secrecy around everything.

http://www.onthecommons.org/content.php?id=2582

The next stop:..draconian penalties..for anyone..who is accused..of violating copyright law.

Details about the treaty..are murky...But the latest draft, according to a leak summarized on the Boing Boing website,..
http://www.boingboing.net/2009/11/03/secret-copyright-tre.html

would require:

That Internet Service/Providers..(ISPs)..have to proactively police copyright..on user-contributed material...This means that it will be impossible..to run a service like Flickr or YouTube or Blogger.. since hiring enough lawyers..to ensure that the mountain of material uploaded..every second isn’t infringing..will exceed any hope of profitability.

That ISPs..have to..cut off the Internet access of accused copyright infringers or face liability...This means that your entire family could be denied to the internet..and hence to civic participation, health information,..education,..communications,..and their means of earning a living..if one member..is accused of copyright infringement,..without access..to a trial or counsel.

That the whole/world..must adopt..US-style..“notice-and-takedown” rules that require ISPs..to remove any material that is accused..again,..without evidence or trial..of infringing copyright.

This has proved a disaster in the U.S. and other countries,..where it provides an easy means..of censoring material,..just by accusing it of infringing copyright.

Mandatory prohibitions on breaking DRM..[Digital Rights Management systems],..even if doing so for a lawful purpose..(e.g., to make a work available to disabled people;..for archival preservation;..because you own/the copyrighted work..that is locked up with DRM).

Who would have guessed..that such nasty stuff was embedded in a treaty called the..“Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement(ACTA)”?
http://www.infowars.com/stealth-treaty-seeks-strict-controls-over-internet/

That title was presumably meant to reassure people that it’s a non-controversial measure.
http://www.keionline.org/node/698

But fighting counterfeits seems to be just the cover story...The real goal is to win a backdoor expansion of copyright law,..much stronger enforcement powers..and greater corporate control of the Internet..all without having to go through..that pesky process known as democracy.

Forrest--I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and don't have the minor problem you mentioned.
However, I was experiencing the You Tube problem for some time when running Linux Mint6--not just You Tube videos, any videos, be they from a news site or elsewhere.. They were either not available, intermittently available, or would cut out after a few seconds-- There was no problem if I used Opera rather than Firefox and also Microsoft XP and Firefox had no problems with these same videos.

Since changing to Ubuntu 9.10 the problem has vanished. I have a vague recollection that this was an intermittent problem when I previously ran Ubuntu 8.4?? I switched to Mint6 because the version of the Audio Editor Audacity packaged with that Ubuntu didnt have the change tempo effect I needed for my language lessons.

I never use Microsoft for the Internet, but need it for my older programs especially for my sewing machine software.
This is just an outline of my experience but unfortuneately no answer regarding the cause of the problematical video useage.
