The preceding verse was [2:190] "You may fight in the cause of GOD against those who attack you, but do not aggress. GOD does not love the aggressors."

I looked up MARANO in Wikipedia because I hadn't come across it before and the term refers to the forced Jewish converts to Christianity in Spain who were deemd to be 'secret jews'. It means 'pig' in Spanish.
