first, it looks like we could meet initial greenhouse targets by replacing cattle with 'roos: (from slate)

"scientists are trying to fight global warming by changing animal flatulence. Emissions from livestock reportedly account for up to half of greenhouse gas emissions in some countries. Kangaroos have stomach bacteria that eliminate methane from their gas; scientists want to transfer these bacteria to sheep and cattle. Bonus: The bacteria could improve digestive efficiency by 10 to 15 percent, thereby reducing feed costs. Alternative proposal: Eat less cattle and more kangaroo meat: "It's low in fat, it's got high protein levels," and "it's the ultimate free range animal." (Related: HN's previous update on global warming and animal flatulence.)

plus, ultimately all oz livestock could be converted to 'roo stomachs, giving us a big head start on exports. but only if local cockies lift their game, and get some help from the ruddster.

after what happened with the solar cell scientist, i expect kangaroos will be dancing around paddocks in finland before we get any action.

so, most important, will you buy and cook skippy's cousins?

Demos, local cockies have already lifted their game in being
some of the world's most efficient farmers. Its you city
slickers who are dragging your heels in the global economy.

As to roos, you ignore the skippy factor. Consumers drive the
market, not farmers.

Get rid of sheep and cattle and what you'll land up with
is very long grass. Add the odd lightning strike and you'll
have massive bushfires, adding lots of CO2 to the atmosphere.

LOL! Business opportunity! It has already been tried with NO success.
People like cow/sheep! and what the hell are we doing eating our Aussie icon. I think we Australians are the only ones that does it.
Its all down to the taste of the consumer. Yes cows and sheep fart a lot, but there numbers that cause this are due to our overwhelming populations, and this is what the problem is, not the cow.
Lets keep the kangaroo for pet food.
P/S Skippy would be turning in his or hers grave. LOL.

evolution "Lets keep the kangaroo for pet food."

oh no, Skippy steaks sit side by side with beef, pork and lamb in my local supermarket and regularly find their way onto my meal plate.

Roo is too good to waste of feeding to critters, enjoy the bounty of one of our national crest bearers, the other one is supposed to be pretty good too (Emu) but I have personally yet to munch on that.
