Does AI Need Government Imposed Guardrails?

The majority agree that AI if allowed to run amok would be a very dangerous thing. Without controls it has the potential of inflicting great harm on human society, possibly even leading to its ultimate destruction, no one is in favour of that. Warnings of the dangers have come from many quarters, surprisingly not the least from prominent AI business leaders themselves, who have repeatedly warned about the severe dangers and existential risks of artificial intelligence.

What's to be done? There are two schools of thought, one that mandatory guardrails be put in place by government to ensure that society is kept safe from the dangers, and important functions of society are kept within human control and oversight. The alternative is to allow the industry to mandate its own voluntary code of self regulation. Do we really want 20 or so mega rich businessmen (they're all men) controlling human destiny? Me thinks not, I'm firmly of the belief that AI is so important that it requires mandatory controls imposed by governments.
