Does AI Need Government Imposed Guardrails?

The majority agree that AI if allowed to run amok would be a very dangerous thing. Without controls it has the potential of inflicting great harm on human society, possibly even leading to its ultimate destruction, no one is in favour of that. Warnings of the dangers have come from many quarters, surprisingly not the least from prominent AI business leaders themselves, who have repeatedly warned about the severe dangers and existential risks of artificial intelligence.

What's to be done? There are two schools of thought, one that mandatory guardrails be put in place by government to ensure that society is kept safe from the dangers, and important functions of society are kept within human control and oversight. The alternative is to allow the industry to mandate its own voluntary code of self regulation. Do we really want 20 or so mega rich businessmen (they're all men) controlling human destiny? Me thinks not, I'm firmly of the belief that AI is so important that it requires mandatory controls imposed by governments.

Hi Trumpster,

Artificial Intelligence is a god send to people such as yourself who lack any kind of human intelligence. I thought the answer to your question; which government? would be self evident, in my case it would be the Australian government, and for YOU the Trump regime, heaven help YOU. The fool in the Trump House (been renamed) is only interested in stoking the profits of his mega rich "friends" in big business, and with a little presidential commission on the side for himself and his cronies, nothing for YOU sycophantic lemmings!

As for the question, AI is to important a development to simply be allowed to be controlled by a handful of mega rich oligarchs, whose only motives are power and profit.

Here is an example of a question put to AI by me. Is mhaze a Trumpster?

Answer; YES, mhaze the Harlem rapper is a Trump supporter. That's YOU!

“I am strongly in favor of common sense, common honesty, and common decency. This makes me forever ineligible for public office … A professional politician is a professionally dishonorable man. In order to get anywhere near high office he has to make so many compromises and submit to so many humiliations that he becomes indistinguishable from a streetwalker”. (H.L Mencken, 1880-1956)

Mencken also wrote, “with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary, the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary”.

Latest examples of scare mongering: climate change, Covid and AI.

And, the population lines up to be scared witless, too stupid to know that they are being lured into more government control and eventual totalitarianism.

These “guard rails” (more silly buzz words that will be spluttered until something else comes along) are just about more controls by the communistic Albanese government.

"Artificial Intelligence is a god send to people such as yourself who lack any kind of human intelligence."

Yes, I hear it can even multiply 300 x 5. Which according to $15TrillionPaul is too hard for mere mortals.

" I thought the answer to your question; which government? would be self evident,"

Yes I knew you'd think that. Most people who don't understand how all this works think that.

The fact is that the Australian Government cannot erect so-called guardrails for Australia. Well they can pass legislation that the clueless will think will work, but they won't work just as their social media bans haven't worked.

The AI phenomena is a world-wide 'industry'. It exists outside of jurisdictions and outside the control of government. Perhaps if the US and Chinese governments worked together they'd stand a chance of reigning AI in, but they've both put the kybosh on that.

Even Albo seems to recognise that, which is why he's talking about pie-in-the-sky notions such as world-wide government efforts to control AI.

The funny part of this is that the same people who fell for every other fabricated scare over the past 60 years are falling for it all over again. What'smore they have the same failed solutions - more government.

They'll never learn and the scare-mongers are grateful for that.

Everything about the Hard Left Albanese indicates that he wants government (his) control over everything. The latest is Artificial Intelligence.

People who still actually read (books) might be interested in “Comrade Prime Minister: 40 Year Alliance with Australian Communism”, by Trevor Loudon, the blurb of which states, a “deep dive” into Albanese's “communist affiliations”, previously hidden (time of publication 2024) with the tiny but “extremely influential” Australian revolutionary movement.

“Albanese has been propelled to prominence by influential Australians whose true allegiance belongs to Moscow, Beijing, and Havana, not Australia”.

The Left commentators describe Loudon as a ‘far right conspiracy theorist’. Of course they do. That’s always their response to the truth.

Hi Trumpster,

For how many years did the Great Satin fool YOU and those of your ilk with the imaginary threat of Communism. For how long did they have YOU trembling in your boots, and wetting your pants in trepidation, over an unreal imagined threat. Worse still the evil ones dragged poor little Australia into unjust wars in Korea, Vietnam and elsewhere, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of innocent Australian youth. This took place for about 50 years! Now they are attempting to create a new boogeyman in the form of China to once again frighten the naive, that's YOU, into unjustified panic!

Gee ttbn it used to be Moscow and Beijing, now I see YOU have thrown in the mob in Havana as well, they're about as scary as Poofy Dog, although anything frightens YOU and the Trumpster these days. As for the nut job and his book of fiction, what can I say, he's a nut job!

"For how many years did the Great Satin fool YOU and those of your ilk with the imaginary threat of Communism."

Well I can't talk for my 'ilk" but the answer for me is zero. You might recall my mentioning often over the years that my job had me visiting the old USSR often in the early 80s through to its fall. I was there and saw how monumentally inefficient communism was and therefore knew it wasn't a threat.

But the threat wasn't imagined...
"Nikita Khrushchev said: “Whether you like it or not, history is on our side. We will bury you!” " I'm sure a good comrade such as yourself bought that!

But what all that has got to do with AI is something conjured in the vivid imagination of 15Trillion.

What I find interesting is how easy its been for the tech billionaires to so scare the perpetually gullible into doing their bidding in trying to get governments to save the billionaire's bacon. Even funnier is that the perpetually gullible think they are sticking it to the man when in fact they are the gormless dupes of the man.

Under new leadership, the Greens will oppose Albanese's Duty Duty of Care Bill because they believe it gives the Communications Minister too much power.

Shoebridge has said that he is not out to help Labor: he is out to replace them.

And, the Coalition has said it will work with the Greens against the DDC and other Albanese brain farts.

Anything can happen in Australia these days.

Shoebridge reckons that the government doesn't really expect the Bill to pass anyway. Australia is no longer a serious country, certainly not the “middle power” that Albanese bangs on about.

Most certainly, a Minister who cannot be trusted with taxpayer money - as Wells proved she is not - should not be in charge of what we can say and see online.

Shoebridge has gone further in indicating that the Green/Labor love affair might be over. He thinks that Albanese is a “very long way” from what Australian voters thought they were getting.

Albanese has failed to improve people's lives, instead focusing on “political messaging rather than substance”. Too “centralised”. A lot of “messaging” without improving “households”.

In response, Albanese has pathetically whined for the Greens to concentrate on the mythical ‘far right’ and leave him free to continue wrecking the country.

This ‘falling out of thieves’ should hearten Australians. And, Shoebridge's claimed intention NOT to make Labor better, but to REPLACE them, is still up to voters, not politicians. The important thing is to get rid of the worst government/prime minister ever.

Hi ttbn,

Should One Nation win office federally, would YOU agree with their Victorian state election policy announced on the weekend that they would jail former premiers? A leading member of Victorian One Nation Mark Nicholson has stated that they would jail former Labor premiers Daniel Andrews and Jacinta Allan “by Christmas” if victorious come November, prompting what The Age called “rapturous applause” from a crowd of about 750 attendees including several Neo-Nazis. I can only assume arrest with be swift, and "appropriate" punishment will be metered out just as swiftly. Just as Hitler said he would inflict extreme punishment on the Jews in 1925, thankfully everyone on the conservative right knew he was only joking. Maybe this grub Nicholson is only "joking" as well.

p/s While banning journalist they don't like from their campaign launch in Victoria, One Nation was happy to give a "front row seats" to a Neo-Nazi on the weekend.
