The cost of this divisive, race based and totally unnecessary referendum will probably be one of the things on the minds of voters 'doing it tough' when they are forced into the polling booths to decide on something that means sweet FA to most of them.
Albanese is an idiot with a tin ear; it is to be hoped that he will be rotting on the back bench after this weekend. Lord knows what he would be replaced with. Shorten? There's not much available. Indyvidual I think that it is Albanese, not Labor in its entirety. The man is a Trotskyite dictator; a man with a chip on his shoulder, unfit for any position above union shop steward. A couple of things need clarification.
Firstly - It's unfortunate that media coverage has focused on a tiny fringe of vile attendees at the pro-Palestinian rallies in Sydney. The slurs came from only a handful of agitators. Mostly young teens who were dealt with. Arab and Muslim elders found their behaviour disgusting and have condemned it. The organizers of the rallies - the Palestine Action Group have also voiced their disapproval. As for the Voice to Parliament? The initial proposal back in 2017 - the concept was rejected at the time by the Liberal-National Turnbull government. In October 2019 - the Liberal National Morrison government wanted the proposal legislated not enshrined in the Constitution. A co-design process organised by Ken Wyatt was completed in July 2021. The Morrison government did not pass any legilsation between July 2021 and the election in 2022 when the Labor government got elected and Albanese kept his election promise to go ahead with the Voice. The Voice has a mixed history as far as the Coalition is concerned. Push and pull. And blaming the cost on Labor is somewhat disingenuous - when the Coalition is saying that if the Voice fails in the referendum - they intend to have another referendum. Double the cost? Odd beaviour to say the least. Posted by Foxy, Wednesday, 11 October 2023 1:00:35 PM

I can say the elitest Voice will fail miserably because YES keeps aboriginals a victim of the past forever. Besides, it will allow radical communists or Muslims to marry into aboriginal families and gain control of the national agenda by their uncontrolled lobbying in the name of sacred sites.
The $360,000,000 spent on the referendum could have built houses for aboriginals in need and elevated them from tin sheds. Posted by Josephus, Wednesday, 11 October 2023 4:04:29 PM

Dear Foxy,
It was an illegal protest full of hatred. The police did not have the bottle to stop them, and instead arrested a guy with an Israeli flag for disturbing the peace. The truth was that it was an antisemitic rabble and posed a significant danger to the community with its calls of hatred. The protest should have been declared illegal and the protestors disbanded. You might listen to the special ABC version but the rest of the world saw the hate filled truth, replete with "yes" banners and Aboriginal flags. The creed of "them and us" is horrible and divisive. Imagine if..
They just built a website like OLO Primarily for indigenous elders of all 250 tribes And they could 'voice' their needs and concerns there. Everyone, including government, could see what the main problems were in all the towns and work towards actually improving things for them, not via constitution, but the actually problems, on the ground spoken from the mouths of the people best suited to bring these issues to light. And all the elders of each tribe, could talk to the elders of the other tribes, and they each could figure out the best way forward to improve things in all of their communities. Open source forum software, $15 domain name, $100 yearly hosting I'm thinking we could achieve more than 'The Voice' would just from that $115, and we could have even just gone ahead and given them the remaining $399,999,885 to implement some of those changes that might actually help them. Well that's what I would've done. Posted by Armchair Critic, Wednesday, 11 October 2023 9:41:24 PM

Foxy,
To claim "It's unfortunate that media coverage has focused on a tiny fringe of vile attendees at the pro-Palestinian rallies in Sydney. The slurs came from only a handful of agitators" is wildly naive. No one at the rally did anything to stop them and a few "elders" later denouncing them means little to nothing. The antisemitic hatred at Sydney Uni is plain to see and this needs to be dealt with Posted by shadowminister, Thursday, 12 October 2023 3:35:49 AM

"A leading pollster has declared there is “no chance” the referendum on a Voice to Parliament will succeed and said in some states the polling is so bad that campaigners should give up now.
The latest data from Roy Morgan puts support for No at 50 per cent and the Yes vote at 45 per cent. And fresh shock polling released today shows support among Indigenous Australians is at just 59 per cent – well below the 80 per cent claimed. For the Voice referendum to get up, a double-majority needs to occur – a majority of all Australians voting Yes and a majority of states backing it. “That’s just not going to happen,” Kos Samaras, director of polling firm Red Bridge, told news.com.au. “It’s all over.” “New South Wales and Victoria could go either way, but it’s really not that close. They’ve got the right demographic mix to sustain enough support. “Even Tasmania, which has been declared as in support of the Voice in some polls – that was a very small sample. “On the flip side, Queensland and Western Australia are overwhelmingly No and there’s no coming back.” In WA and Queensland, the numbers are so bad for the Yes campaign that Mr Samaras said “they should just give up, I’m afraid”. Two high ranking LIBERAL PARTY hacks Josh Frydenberg and Mathias Cormann have been named at the Senate Inquiry into the billion dollar tax rorting schemes promoted and sold to big business by PWC, the same mob who were paid millions of taxpayer dollars, to supposedly show the Noalition government how to deal with multinational tax rorting. Hopefully it will be revealed what part Noalition government members played in all this ripping off of taxpayers between 2013 and 2020.
p/s, $400 million on the referendum is small beer when compared to Noalition government rorts and wast, that covers billions. Posted by Paul1405, Friday, 13 October 2023 1:01:53 PM

As you were sacked from the PS for incompetence, you are now filled with hatred for the decent men and women of Australia's public service. Maybe if the Noalition had not run the PS into the ground, and allowed their rip-off mates a free hand, it would not have come to this, billions ripped off! Back at it with your lies and half-truths. Neither Corman nor Frydenburg have had anything to do with the scandal at PWC nor have they been implicated. Considering that this is happening under the Labor gangreen regime, perhaps you should look closer to home. But you are right, $400,000,000 of wasted taxpayer money is a drop in the ocean of Labor's $1000,000,000,000 debt, but it does look bad during Labor's cost of living crisis and the voice rout to come. I forgot to mention another LIBERAL PARTY hack also features predominantly at the 'PWC Tax Rort' Inquiry, the cigar chopping "Smoken" Joe Hockey. Add in the billions rorted by the LIBERAL PARTY in government, through 'Sportsrorts', 'Carparkrorts' 'Swimmingpoolsrorts' and 'Landrorts' then $400K well spent on letting the people decide is nothing, nil, zilch infinitesimal, microscopic, teeny etc etc. And of course ScumO' and Friedbrain dished out billions to their mates down at the big end of town, and now the taxpayer is saddled with A TRILLION DOLLARS OF LIBERAL PARTY DEBT! I have never been prouder to be an Australian than today.
The defeat of the Voice to Parliament is a major victory for the Australian way of life, and a victory for unity over division. The defeat is total, comprehensive, inarguable, and permanent. In voting against the Voice, Australians voted for the continuation of our way of life, one that is based on fairness, equal treatment, democracy, and freedom. It is this way of life that has created a society of unparalleled opportunity, prosperity, and tolerance. It shows that Australians believe Australia is a great country with strong foundations, and they want to keep it that way. I know many of you, like me, are relieved this debate is over. But we must remember that this is really just the end of the beginning, and winning the peace is just as important as winning the battle. I would encourage you to enjoy tonight and the next few days, but stay engaged for what comes next. The simple reason why Australians voted ‘No’ is that they did not want our nation to be permanently divided by race. Australians fully understand that providing different rights to different people based on race is inconsistent with our values. Posted by shadowminister, Sunday, 15 October 2023 4:49:56 AM

I hope that whichever Fed Govt we'll have next term, they will provide a Voice to Govt with the one that has been in place for a number of years but never did its job or disband the NIAA.
Perform & stay or be gone. Too much money going to too few for nothing at the expense of the real needy ! The result of this referendum is a golden opportunity to weed out the horde of useless money wasters & replace them with society builders ! The NO will soon be seen by all as a massive blessing ! The indigenous just got a new chance which the Voice would have denied them. Posted by Indyvidual, Sunday, 15 October 2023 6:12:50 AM

Yes, hopefully it might be the the start of a new approach to closing the gap. Fifty years based on the belief that indigenous Australians had the answers has been a failure. The Voice would have been more of the same. The Yes camp in defeat reminded me of Donald Trump.

- I can't seem to figure out whether or not it only applies to indigenous workers Public servants offered five days of paid leave if they are psychologically distressed by Australia voting against the Voice http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12649475/The-Voice-days-work-referendum-result.html "Public servants in Queensland have been offered five days of paid leave if they are suffering from psychological distress following the failed Voice referendum. Leaders in the public sector this week received an email telling them they could grant workers special leave as well as sick leave. The message, from Public Sector Commissioner David Mackie, called on department bosses to consider the emotional impact the referendum's result would have on indigenous workers. He added that the initiative was to ensure staff members remained mentally well." Also this: Big banks offer 'cultural leave' to Aboriginal workers after Voice defeat http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12638113/Big-banks-NAB-Westpac-ANZ-cultural-leave-Indigenous-Voice-referendum.html "Indigenous workers at some of Australia's top banks are being offered paid leave to recover from the Voice referendum result. National Australia Bank (NAB) is offering cultural leave and counseling to Indigenous employees after Australia voted No in the referendum on Saturday. Westpac and ANZ also have 'special leave' that could allow Indigenous staff to take time off to recover from the fallout, while accounting giant KPMG is offering to hold 'yarning circles' for Indigenous employees to discuss the result and 'heal in a culturally safe space'." I have mentioned this twice elsewhere. It appears to be true, along with our wimpy cricketers, who were offered counselling, just in case, even before the lights went out on the Voice. The rejection of the Voice was also a rejection of the Yes supporters themselves: those people who " pride themselves on having the judgement and wisdom to diagnose social ills and prescribe solutions" (Nick Cater).
The choking, swearing, and abuse of No voters and 'racist' Australia was appalling. The referendum result was a rude shock to the holier-than-thou Left. The more polite ones were "perplexed and devastated", as one 'celebrity' tweeted. The aboriginal industry must now be worried that their hugely expensive quangos and fabulously paid jobs will now come under more scrutiny. Posted by ttbn, Saturday, 21 October 2023 7:06:58 AM

I have always believed the "Voice" was supported by Palestinian Islamists, and we have evidence of this at Pine Gap this morning where one hundred Islamic extremists met outside the facility to protest the war against Palestine. A facility they believe is on stolen land. Australia is being drawn into the conflict by people who cannot live peacefully with their neighbors.

That's very euphemistic Josephus. It is a hateful antisemitic movement that has always been about refusing a two state solution and only offers Israelis a choice of leave or be killed. I amazed that a racist anti-immigration terrorist organisation is not being condemned by the Greens and factions of Labor. You certainly vacuum up information, Josephus. What Palestinians hope to achieve by demonstrating outside Pine Gap only Allah knows. They will gain nothing, in my opinion; just as all those outside the Opera House will gain nothing except dislike and contempt. Australia or any other Western country they have shifted to is not the place to carry on like mad dogs over wars in foreign countries over which Australia has no control; and very little interest in or sympathy for Israel from the Albanese extreme Left government.
AC Yes. No surprises. We know what is going to happen. I don't think that we will ever be surprised by people who seem hell bent on dragging society down to their level. Posted by ttbn, Saturday, 21 October 2023 9:45:16 AM

Indyvidual,
On the positive side, the referendum did bring the plight of remote indigenous people to public attention, although the price was a bit steep. What I don't understand is the pull down the shutters approach of government to these problems when they were claiming they had the solutions and didn't need any special powers to implement them. Posted by Fester, Sunday, 22 October 2023 9:29:58 AM

Fester,
As Hasbeen stated in another thread, the referendum had nothing to do with the indigenous ! Many of us know the real agenda but to reveal that now would cause more division ! Indyvidual,
Listening to Bob Katter today I got the impression that the communist system remote communities live under, along with native title, is very restrictive on their lives. Indigenous control could be contributing to their problems rather than delivering them from their destitution. It is a big shame to see all the yes people so passionate about the plight of indigenous Australians just blow off to the next pet issue of their cult leader after pissing up 450 mill on a wall. The antisemitism doesn't sit well with me either. Posted by Fester, Sunday, 22 October 2023 8:01:07 PM

The problem with these ignorant do-gooders is just that, ignorance ! If some idealist yuppies decide to camp in the bush for some time to "connect with nature" they're portrayed as some alternative life-stylers.
Yet the Aborigines who choose to live in the outback generate headlines of discrimination & words like plight are very fashionable ! General Australian non-indigenous society has a far greater percentage of "plight". No do-gooders give a hoot about unfashionable battlers who don't get anywhere near the support doing it tough. I think apart from a much more sinister agenda, the big problem is people or rather hypocrites of every ethnicity making big money from the perpetual "plight' bleating. A Gap Year National Service would very quickly do away with this deliberately created & perpetuated ignorance & our society would be much, much better than it is presently ! The question is now whether Albozo should stay in office. Already his approval rating has plummeted, and while the polls still favour labor the trend is that the gap is closing and there is speculation that Albo will get knifed just as Rudd did.
