I'll generally agree with you there, the numbers are uncertain, but certainly substantial, running into the many millions. Stalin, Mao etc claimed to be communists, but in reality they were nothing more than totalitarian despots who came to power in what were already failed states open to extremism. I would think tribal societies are closer to the ideals of communism than Russia in 1917, or China in 1949. In any fragmented volatile society extremist are going to try and grasp the opportunity to take control, and often are successful. What they call themselves doesn't matter, Communists, National Socialists etc its their effect on society that matters.
