I used to be a frequent visitor to the Chinese Governments Xinhuanet website. See:
www.xinhuanet.com/english/index.htm Or, rather, DO NOT SEE! CLICK AT YOUR OWN RISK! Wikipedia describes Xinhua as "...the official press agency of the government of the People's Republic of China" See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xinhua_News_Agency However my recently installed McAfee virus protection program gives the following warning about the Xinhuanet website: "In our tests we found downloads on this site that some people consider adaware, spyware or other potentially unwanted programs" Note: McAfee gives a clean bill of health to ABC, BBC, Deutsche Welle, NPR, Press Trust of India & VOA. Either these official news sites have stealthier spyware than Xinhuanet or they are, at least for now, clean. The CIA website also passes the McAfee test. Manorina, and others
I think you miss the point China isn't stupid etc as you claim. I would suggest that both Yahoo and Google were the naive. They came to China expecting Western philosophy where the corporations have influence with the government they simply don't. They also went there full of western (Yank) arrogance and greed blinded by both to the reality. 60 years conditioning was never going to be overcome anytime soon. The cultural and nationalistic resistance to the West, the single-mindedness of the government should have warned them that the cost of dealing with China in China. What both firms should have realized that the Chinese don't regard the west as as equal partners but as *exploitable* resources. Their lack of concern about patents and control over its people IMO are clear indicators. Look at their attitude to the China operation of the Aussie resource company's senior execs, their response to the rebuff to buying a lump of the same company. Add to that their influence with economic aid and in 3rd world resources. Australia is yet to feel their muscles but we will. They are like The US interested only in their dominance/success. The western worlds addiction to greed and consumerism has delivered us into their hands. Where do you think our debt is ultimately held? The West is not in the position anymore to out bid China and Western military belligerence, self obsessed cultural superiority and myopic hegemonic tendencies are creating more opportunities for the Chinese. Simply put they have a long term plan and so long as CPC runs China it will stick to it and the west....doesn't. Posted by examinator, Saturday, 23 January 2010 1:11:34 PM

Agree with examinator.China is not stupid.Their civilisation is over 2000yrs old and they think in terms of decades in long term plans.
China by keeping it's yuan and wages low and is now the manufacturing centre of the planet. The West has brought new technology and capital to it's shores willingly. We have many of the largests corporations on the planet located there. All China has to do is let their own people infiltrate these organisations get the knowledge and expertise then lo and behold one day just nationalise the means of production. The West would be held hostage once they with Russia secure energy and resources.China and Russia currently have mutual energy and infrastrusture projects going.China is now in Africa and parts of Asia securing more resources and energy. Once China has control of the means of production and the resources/ energy, the trap will be complete. The USA{military industrial complex]] is currently trying to surround China militarily in case the monetary system of control will fail.It will fail because China knows that money is not the source of production. They have people and lots of them to throw at any problem that may arise. The US relies on high tech weaponery and a corrupt global banking system to achieve supremecy. This will not be enough in the long run to win in terms of what they perceive as power. The Western Global Banksters/Wall St, have shot everyone, including themselves in the foot. Having come back from Shanghai this weekend, it was clear from the China daily newspaper and other heavily censored local newspapers that the issue is being presented in china as the chinese authorities attempts to protect their children against pornograpy and violence being underpinned by the censorship regime, which google and the outside are trying to undermine. (sound familiar Steven Conroy!)
In one article, the new legislation in Australia was cited as an example of a western country doing exactly the same, and the hypocrasy of the "imperialists". If Australia goes ahead with the net filtering, the difference between Chinese and Australian control of the media will be one only of degree. Presumably the Chinese are also in no mood to take any lessons from their own situation which can only be described as a disaster waiting to happen.
There is only one piece of relevant advice for private persons or corporations wishing to visit, work or invest in China - don't go there.
