By Alex Rogers, published 25/9/2009

Global management could prevent ocean dead zones - water everywhere, but not a fish in sight.

A great article, with some sound commonsense at the end. Two things though - first, world food demand is poised to double and if the fish catch cannot double at the same time (and many experts would agree it cannot)the the insatiable demand for protein must be transferred to the land or to aquaculture, both of lead to further degradation of the land and water resource base. In other words, saving the oceans destroys the land quicker.
Second, the average cat in western countries eats more fish than the average human.

Yes good article but we may have far bigger problems than we realise.

I posted this on another thread and if true we are facing a calamity of epic proportions.

I guess the question is would you like plastic with your fish and chips?

Professor Callum Roberts has written an amazing book - An Unnatural History of the Sea - a history of fishing for around the last 1000 years. How little we've learned. 400 years ago, were the first calls to ban trawlers. And with each species collapse, another species is victimised. Appalling waste and appalling abuse...Fisheries may be the most mismanaged of all our mismanaged environments.

Fisheries is about the catching of fish, not about about managing the ocean environment.

Behold - the Sixth Extinction and may their God forgive them - the greedy, the selfish, the vandal - the ignorant, for they know not what they do, nor do they care!
